Speed Governor / Limiter

I'm a little unclear on exactly where the Governor kicks in and how it works when relative to MPH or KMH.

I'm in Canada, 2011 v6, and the fastest I've gotten my car was about 190 (km per hour or 118 MPH roughly)

I've gone through forums and see guys talk about hitting 150 MPH (240 km per hour) in a v6 Camaro...

Obviously there is difference between 190 km per hr and 150 MPH, so what i'm trying to figure out is if the Governor kicks in at a different point depending on Imperial or Metric measurements?

Does the Governor step in at a higher speed with the SS? If so, I feel cheated, my speedometer says I can go 240 but reality is otherwise

it's depending on the tires that came with your car. if it came with the pirellis the speed limit is set higher. i believe they're limited to 155mph if it came with the pirellis. (rs package?)

Buy a set of higher speed rated tires and get a tune to remove the limiter to hit the upper end of the speedo. Then beware of the Mounties!

155. That's fast. I've been in non-governor equipped cars that make lots of power. The drag from the body was the limiting factor, lol

Lol thank you, I've got some Nitto Invos for the summer already, and I didn't know that could be done. Not that I really NEED to hit 155 mph, the voice in my head already just tells me to shut her down around 100 lol...

you dont need the RS package to have 155 limit. i have a 2LT with 19 inch wheels and its at 155. the LS is at 118 with 18 inch. the 19 and 20 inch wheels, no matter RS or no RS or SS, all are at 155. the ZL1 is 180

Wrong, it has to do with speed rating of the tire, not the size of the rim.

Here are some stats... The governor is located in the BCM (Body Control Module)...

Next a magazine took out an SS and a Non-SS to the saltflats to see net speed. Of course this was without the governor.

V6 = 146
V8 = 176

Of course both cars were stock and weather conditions... ect.. have allot to do with all this.

Yup, OP. It's all about the tires that come on the car from the factory - different speed ratings. Your LS no doubt came with the standard typical tire... not rated for high speed like the Perelli P-Zeros and other found on most cars with RS package. As others have said, you can get higher rated tires and have the speed limiter re-tuned accordingly, but it's gonna cost you a few bucks. You need to consider if you really need to be able to go well over 100 mph.

Limiter in our stock EU V8 (similar to 2SS/RS) is set to slightly above 260 km/h (speedometer reading) which is around true 250 km/h (~155mph).

Cheers from Germany

Thanks, clears it all up for me. Lol in reality, I think I'll leave it where it's at least for now, that's already well over the legal limit here. I was thinking of doing some mods in the coming year and taking it to the track, maybe I'll get it done around then. I've also really considering getting my hands on an SS too though, this might be a pusher hehehe

There ya go. The cost of putting RS-type high speed wheels and tires, and then getting a quality tune for your LS... would help a lot if you put it toward a down-payment on a SS instead. Then you wouldn't have to ever wonder if your car would go fast enough.
