It's true, the new Camaro is so heavy that you should only get the SS if you are looking for performance. People have made a big deal out of the V6 having 300hp, but in reality it's only a tad better than a V6 mustang or Challenger.

Open the hood of an old car then a new one and you can easily see why there is so much more weight. If you don't want the extra parts pull 'em out and sell 'em. AC, 9 speaker stereo, emission parts, air bags and clinchers, sound deadening material, and 100s of feet of wire add up to a lot of weight.

Interesting, since I have read that 1st gens weighed from 3300 (ZL1) 3800 (SS 396). Perhaps the trans am spec Z28's were below 3000 but not the production cars.

Model Bloat!?!-Jalopnik
Jalopnik is at it again trying to bash our car, but they do have a point.
The original Camaro was made of steel and other heavy materials according to todays standards and was even below the 3000 pound mark. Even with todays "light weight" materials the car is still the heaviest its ever been, BUT it gets it BEST gas mileage of any other gen. Though it may tie the 4th gen. It's all the safety standards and accessories that are killing the weight. http://jalopnik.com/5140813/model-bl...37-model-years |

You've peaked my interest. Seems I have seen that as well, but can't remember where. I shall have to do a bit of research. |

yeah, but how many of the first gens had dual air bags? anti-lock brakes? pcm? wiring? etc. all the little stuff that we have for creature comforts adds up on weight.
the added benefit of safety adds to the added weight of the car.

Yep. Not to mention all the stuff they employ to make the car bulletproof in the event of a crash. It's no wonder these cars weigh so much today.

How many of them had a robust IRS? And...37 years of steadily increasing structural mandates... /nuff said. Interesting article. But frankly, you don't see people complaining about BMW M3s, M5s, or Audi A5s, S5s, or R8s (yup...). If it performs...who the hell cares. And this car PERFORMS! |
