What is the Latest 'reliable' model lineup?

Two of the big car mags (Road & track & Motor Trend) have reported the lineup to be a Base V6, or possibly two V6 options, the 220bhp V6, followed by the Direct Induction 300 HP CTS Engine, as possibly LS & LT Models;

Next up would be a Z28 Model as the V8 Option, with the detuned Vette Engine, generating about 400HP;

And then within the following year, a Convertible option, and a supercharged 'LSA' SS Model generating between 450-500 BHP as the top dog;

Yet many of you are saying that instead, the SS Will be the Base V8 Option, with the Z28 coming out later on as the top dog with the Supercharged V8.

Isn't the information from those two mags usually pretty reliable, or are they speculating? Where is the info that the SS will be the top dog coming from?

In any event, whicever is the Base v8 Option, hopefully it comes in at under 30K;

Welcome to the site! And good questions; those are ones we'd all like to know the answers to.

It all depends on who you ask. Lots of people assume because the 4thgen's had the SS as the top, this Camaro will continue that. Others believe it will be the top because the 1960's SS was the "best" (again, depending who you ask).
On the other hand, there's a few insider rumors that would insinuate the Z28 being the top car this time around.....

There is one thing we can tell you with 99% certainty, based off the competition. There WILL be a V8 available for under 30 thousand dollars.

I'm guessing;

LS/LT - V6 models
SS - V8
Z28 - High-Performance V8

Thanks for the welcome; Yeah, I'm sure GM is sure about the model lineup, but probably has debated how to badge the models accordingly;

As I said, I would be more than content with either an 'SS' or 'Z28' Option with the base V8, if it comes in at around 28K or so;

Does anyone also know whether or not the Direct Injected V6 or base V8 run on regular octane; Hopefully neither one requires premium fuel, that would be a potential showstopper....

the V6 may require premium... my girlfriend has a 350Z which takes 93 (premium) and its a killer.

but to be honest, id rather own a Z28 so id rather that be the base V8. Thats all im going to be able to afford going into college this fall.

We can't say anything about the V8s, cause we don't know what they'll be (chances are it'll only be reccomended, though)
But for sure I can tell you that the DI V6 needs nothing more than regular 89 octane.

Hm well i hope it breaks down alittle like this:

RS: for the v6's and optional w/v8's
Z28: for the base V8
SS: topdog v8

Now, for the Z it should have the handling department, so running around a track it could keep up to the SS and/or surpas it, and have the SS as a straightline terror but with handling in mind.

If GM is going to have a 4cyl. engine i think the LT stuff should be put on that.

Again, JMO.

The most reliable info is that there will be a V6, 2 V8's, one will have a supercharger, one will be called SS. There will likely be an RS.

Nothing is known for sure about the existance of a Z28 or ZL1.

I'm thinking that the lineup will be as follows
$22 000
280 hp DI V6
$28 500
380 hp 6.0L (L76 variant) Z28
$42 000
525 hp 6.2L (LSA variant) SS

RS would be an optional appearance package for all. In my dreams I wish for a special lightweight ZL1 with an LS7, but that will not happen since the LS7 is on its way out.

The 3.6 DI in the STS/CTS is designed to run on regular unleaded...
(from GM's website)
http://www.gm.com/explore/fuel_econo...est_121407.jsp

Where we are, regular unleaded = 87 octane.
Quote:
3.6L V-6 VVT with direct injection

GM Powertrain's new 3.6L V-6 VVT with direct injection technology is GM's highest output V-6 and one of the most fuel-efficient in GM's high-feature engine family. It made its debut as the top-level engine in the new 2008 Cadillac CTS, delivering 304 horsepower (227 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm) - a 15-percent increase in horsepower and 8-percent increase in torque.

Even with this performance, the 2008 CTS equipped with the 3.6L V-6 VVT with direct injection and automatic transmission delivers 2008 EPA fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway - an improvement of 3 percent over its predecessor. The engine helps the CTS achieve 0-60 mph performance of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (248 kph). The engine is available with either an automatic or a manual transmission.

The 3.6L DI V-6 with direct injection engine is also available in the 2008 Cadillac STS and improves fuel economy by 1 mpg in the city and 3 mpg on the highway, while providing a 47 horsepower increase over last year's model.

The application of direct injection reduces cold-start hydrocarbon emissions by 25 percent and it is designed to operate with regular unleaded gasoline.

Gasoline direct injection differs from the fuel delivery process of a conventional fuel injected engine by delivering fuel directly into the combustion chamber, where it is mixed with air drawn in to the chamber. The advantage is improved fuel control and a more complete burn, which generally requires less fuel than a conventionally injected engine of the same size and configuration.
Best regardSS,

Elie
