Question

Can you use a previous plate? I had a custom plate on my '01 Z that I still have. As long as no one else from my state has taken it should I be able to use it again?

See...that's what I thought too. But, I was down at our police vehicle shop today and what do I see??? I see a new crown vic in preperation to be decked out w/ all SAPD lights, sirens, decals and stuff and it has a new plate w/ 7 digits! I was like... We were just discussing this in this thread on the last page, I think. I thought only 6. Then, I saw the new plate w/ 7. I spoke to another officer who said 7 digits/numbers on GOVERNMENT VEHICLES ONLY. Now, I'm not sure. He was pretty sure, but...who knows. I'm calling the DMV tomorrow because I have an idea....

and the plate was like this... 123 4567....with 3 numbers, space, 4 numbers.

You can transfer a license plate from one car to the next*. If you've just had it lying around though, you may not be able to. I dunno.

*However (at least in NJ) you can NOT transfer tags from a truck to a car and vice versa. Truck - Truck or Car - Car Only.

^Correct from what I knew. I can transfer my tags to my new Camaro. If they expired, the plate goes back into the system as being available. When you go into the DMV, you ask the person to run the plate to see if it's available. They can tell you right then and there. They gave me the runaround the first time. "We can't tell you if it's taken or not. You have to mark your choices on this form and you get what's available." I said, "uh...no." I told them I wasn't taking chances and didn't want to get rejected on all 3 choices...so could she PLEASE check (being polite helps) and hesitated, but said ok.

They've got 10 people standing in front of computers that can look up a plate in a matter of seconds. They CAN do it and I knew this. That is why I was "suprised" when they told me to send in the info and WAIT. I was very cool about it and polite, which is probably why I found out right then and there.

Yeah, I know I can't just use the physical plates I have in my possesion right now, but as long as no one else has taken them by the time I request my plates for my new car I should be able to use the same "saying" I had? I figured yes, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the replies.

As I look at the Camaro poster on my wall in front of my computer, I am coming up with more plates ideas. This is fun.....................
