What you have to do is compare the HP you are making in the current gear to the HP you would be making in the lower gear. It depends on the car, but the ideal shiftpoint is usually 500-1000 rpm past peak power. Even though the horsepower is down a bit after the 5900 peak, it will be much lower in the next gear as the engine will be down around 4000 rpm. You are right that you can feel this decrease in acceleration once you pass peak power, but you will still be better off staying in that gear (to a point). The longer you hold the gear, the higher rpm you start off at in the next gear as well, so it can make a big difference, depending on the car.

Even more interesting is that the car seems to get quicker if you do 2-3 consecutive runs without cool-down. The 4th runs went slower, too much heat soak and the coolant temps reach 220-221F on the 4th run in a row. Seems the sweet spot was coolant temps in the 200-212F range. Did one run at 186F coolant temp, and it only went 13.3.

Your time needs to be added to the fastest 1/4 mile times list.
We also need to update the format and get that thing going. The 1st page of the thread should have the track times on it. Anyone? |

Outstanding runs!!! Thanks for the report. Why are the camaros with automatic transmissions SOOOOOO much slower? Also, does it make sense to anyone that our new camaros would run quicker times after say 1000+ miles break-in and and maybe an oil change than brand new off the the lot and maybe 100 miles...? Thanks,
PS I was expecting the automatics to be a little slower, not almost a second slower in the 1/4 mile...? |

I missed the numbers from New Era, where is that posted? I dont recall reading any L99 automatics with low 13's yet (stock). I have seen several manual transmission Camaro in that range though... The one I saw at my local drag strip went a BEST of 13.66 I think. I seen numbers from others in the 13.80-14.30 range. There are a lot of questions on TM, TC and tuning... They look Great no matter what they are running!
