Going the cheap route for now.. Cutt off the mufflers, and/or cat?..
hey guys, so I def want to get the borla exhaust system, but for now, I think I might be going the cheap route.
Has anyone tried to just replace the cat and/or muffler with just a straight pipe? I see some stock setups on craigslist with this done, but I dont know what it sounds like.. Anyone got a video of it? Will it set off my check engine light? Thanks. |

P.S. Obviously right now, I just want it to sound mean.. I doubt it will get much of a power gain, but in the same respect, I dont want it to lose power either..

Here is mine when I had the muffler delete...I had headers also though so it is a little bit louder than just muffler delete. If your sensative to drone then i wouldn't recommend it until you ride with someone who has it done.

Go with a muffler delete. Cutting off your cats will throw a CEL.

If you can handle the drone then the old muffler delete works great. As far as chopping out your cats goes its pretty illegal. So your run of the mill exhaust shop won't do it. A good cheap options is Solo axlebacks. They sound great, pretty loud and have no drone! But if you don't drive on the highway much and can handle the drone by all means... chop them mufflers.

Here is what I did when I first got my car. Muffler delete, resonated x-pipe, and rear cat delete. This got me by for a while until I got the money together for header and exhaust. I then sold this setup to a guy with a 2LT for $300 so ulitmately it did really cost me much at all.

I just did a muffler delete last week and it sounds great. I guess I was use to the drone since when I did the exhaust on our corvette it has it, but you get use to it. I had a shop do mine for $120 and just used the stock tips. Its alot cheaper then buying the slp kit which is the same thing.

You may want to consider adding mid pipes with high flow cats while you are at. You can pick up some decent HP without needing a tune and they definitely improve the sound quality at the same time.
