Actually, 305s are a little more than 3/4 of an inch wider than 285s.

TireRack is showing the Goodyear tread width as:

305 = 11.5

285 = 10.5

Yep and actual contact patch is different by brand and model of tire.

As much as I love Mustangs (and like Camaro's), I still say the Camaro's stance, Magnetic Trick Suspension and Computer controlled consistency are going to give it the edge. Still can't wait to drive one, or come up against one even though I am down against it and the upcoming GT500.
With the proper rim and suspension you can fit 315s all the way around a GT so I would only assume a boss and GT500 can do the same.

That might be the contact patch for a specific good year tire.

305 = 12.007

285 = 11.22

You can put both wider wheels and tires on mustangs without having a wide body kit. I myself am running a 20x11 wheel in the rear with 315/35-20 size tire. I know guys who have 335 and 345's in the back. To think that the widest tire you can use is a 285 is absurd.

When talking from a factory standpoint...it may not be so crazy...but I'm no Mustang nut, so I can't say so with authority. What I do know is that we've seen people pushing 315s on their Camaros around here...but the engineers chose to stick with a 305 on the back end of the ZL1. Like it or not, certain aspects of these cars jolt us back into the realities of a mass-produced "compromised" car...

So what you're saying is that I'm going to lose the bet with my friend that says the next Camaro and Mustangs come with MT DR's from the factory?

The key there is compromise. GM/Ford/whoever knows they can't please everyone without having an option sheet 34 pages long, so precisely as you've suggested, they compromise.

Too bad you have a mullet dragoneye, otherwise we could be special internet buddies.

I don't think the ZL1 will unlock for people with mullets....just a theory...

Bingo. I was running a 335/35/17 on my '02 and just because I could get it on the car, didn't mean it was a great idea, lol. I know that's not what 'pedder was completely saying, but there are obviously other considerations when discussing maximum tire widths.

I'm still going to try to stuff at least a 325 under ZL1

Considering there's only a $1300ish dollar difference between the base price of the '12 Boss LS vs the base price of the '12 GT500, I'd be shocked if the '13 GT500 cost significantly more than the '13 LS does. My guess is Ford will price it within a few hundred dollars of the ZL1 at $54kish.

Yep. My point was that they are "competitively" pricing this car. I am sure it will be within $5k of the ZL1.

Here's where the GT500 has a HUGE edge. If the GT500 owner desires to crank up the boost, or put a bottle to his car...he feels pretty good about it because Ford gave him a fully forged engine included in his base price.

The ZL1 owner who dials up the boost or puts the hose to his car is going to have a puckered rear end because while GM gave him all kinds of neat coolers for track days, they gave him an engine with a stout forged crank....but sadly, powdered metal internals.

What was the measuring rim width? I came up with the 3/4" number by taking the width of the widest tire in millimeters, subtracting the smaller width tire and converting it inches.

305mm-285mm=20mm
20mm / 25.4=.787"

But why are we talking about mustangs on a camaro forum? Lol
If you are going to bash the MT-82 so hard I really suggest you do some long hard research on the TR6060 , in everything it has been offered in (Camaro SS, Vette, Viper, GT500, Challenger), the results may surprise, dismay, and even make you double think this constant BS you are spewing.....
