I'm starting to feel this thread was more about getting attention than a real issue.

I posted this before. I used to work across from a Chevy dealer. The gas pumps they used were about a block away. All day long the lot guys beat on cold cars to go get gas. People always think their low mile new car hasn't been beat on but it probably has. Unless you were there to see it off the truck lol

Do you think that the automotive engineers are unaware of the fact that new cars of any make or model are bounced off the rev limiter by test drivers, delivery/dealer trade drivers and lot boys. It has been this way for a hundred years my friend. It doesn't matter. Life is waaaaaaaaay to short to get a wedgy over things that don't really matter.

Just to put this out there for you....Tom Henry Chevrolet is family to the one and only FBODFATHER himself, Mr. Scott Settlemire, so you're in good hands to say the least.

Congratulations on the purchase and enjoy the ride.

Many new cars have the ECM locked or programmed in "shipping mode" from the manufacturer. This is supposed to severely limit rpm, speed and shifting, kind of like a "teen mode" of sorts. Only after the new car is off-loaded from the truck at the dealer is the "shipping mode" turned off during the pre-sale preparation process. The express purpose of "shipping mode is to limit such abuse. I know this is factual because I was at the dealer when my GEN5 ZL1 and my C7 Z06 were taken off the truck. The Z06 was completely wrapped in a protective cover over the entire vehicle. Both cars were in "shipping mode" which was turned off during PDI. Of course this does nothing to prevent abuse by someone at the dealership.

Congratulations on your new toy. You're going to love it!
Mr. Wyndham, please correct me if I am wrong. I have not completely read the GEN6 ZL1 owner's manual. i recall the GEN5 ZL1 had a rather long break-in period of the first 1500 mile according to Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser. Doesn't the GEN6 ZL1 have similar break-in requirement ie. vary speed, not over 80 mph, limit or vary acceleration? I figure you will know.

Yes. Exactly what you said. 1500 miles. Keep it under 80 mph, under 4000 rpm, and no wide open throttle. Vary load, rpm, and speed.

Yessir!

Here's what the manual says:

Quote:
Follow these recommended guidelines during the first 2,414 km (1,500 mi) of driving this vehicle. Parts have a break-in period and performance will be better in the long run.
  • Avoid full throttle starts and abrupt stops.
  • Do not exceed 4000 engine rpm.
  • Avoid driving at any one constant speed, fast or slow.
  • Do not drive above 129 km/h (80 mph).
  • Avoid downshifting to brake or slow the vehicle when the engine speed will exceed 4000 rpm.
  • Do not let the engine labor. Never lug the engine in high gear at low speeds. With a manual transmission, shift to the next lower gear. This rule applies at all times, not just during the break-in period.
  • Do not participate in racing events, sport driving schools, or similar activities during this break-in period.
  • Check engine oil with every refueling and add if necessary. Oil and fuel consumption may be higher than normal during the first 2 414 km (1,500 mi).
  • To break in new tires, drive at moderate speeds and avoid hard cornering for the first 322 km (200 mi). New tires do not have maximum traction and may tend to slip.
  • New brake linings also need a break-in period. Avoid making hard stops during the first 322 km (200 mi). This is recommended every time brake linings are replaced.
  • Should the vehicle be used for racing or competitive driving (after break-in), the rear axle lubricant must be replaced beforehand.

They should add to the recommended break-in:

*No free of charge video/review performance sessions by non-owner prior to actual owner taking delivery.

Based on the video, I would buy it but, you should try to get a little discount or something out of it, just because. Also, don't forget about all the youtube videos of people just revving the car to readline to hear the exhaust, my thought probably harder on the engine than a little spirited driving....

I'd be more upset with some weirdo busting a nut in the drivers seat from a 3rd gear roll than him actually "breaking it in hard" ... As stated its recommended and can be thoroughly debated weather a factory break in actually yields longer life or better performance.

I'm pretty sure that when they prescribe the break in process, they are speaking to more than just the engine. There are many other parts and systems, transmission, clutch, rear end, wheel bearings, and probably even some of the emission stuff that are considered as well.

That is a very good point. Its hard to properly bed in brake pads and adhere to the manuals engine's break in procedure. And we never questioned how to break in the new A10...Which might be pretty expensive to replace in the future.
