GM Building New GEN-5 V-8 in St. Catharines

General Motors of Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to bringing a new transmission line to St. Catharines as part of a tentative contract agreement struck early Thursday morning with the Canadian Auto Workers.

The company is expected to finalize its $300-million to $400-million plan to start making six-speed, rear-wheel drive transmissions at its Glendale Avenue plant by this fall, union president Buzz Hargrove said during a news conference Thursday.

Hargrove said it’s uncertain what, if any, new jobs the new line will bring to St. Catharines. In May 2007, GM announced it was poised to bring the transmission line to the city.

“There’s been a delay in the launch of it because of the uncertainty facing the industry and consumer preference changes that are there,” Hargrove said.

“They have assured us during the life of this agreement they’re going to launch the six-speed transmission in St. Catharines.”

As part of the tentative three-year contract agreement, GM has also committed to building new fuel-efficient Gen-5, V-8 engines in St. Catharines, Hargrove said.

As far as when will it debut, no one knows but, I did find a document regarding future business and Delphi is going to be making many components for GEN 5. A chart showed they are going to start making the GEN 5 parts in 2011, but small in volume ramping up to several times that in 2012.

That's awesome news!!! I have a very good feeling that my new 5th Gen Camaro is going to have a Gen V motor w/ 6spd trans. Oh, and I'll be easily getting over 30 mpgs!

Oh yeah...for a long while. If there's one thing I'm really stoked about besides the Camaro, it's the new engines GM is coming out with. I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves!!

Thanks guys! I'll have my 30 years by the end of August but with two boys away at school and a 14 year old girl, you're right, I will be working for a while. Ratification vote is today so I will have more details then. Got to see how this drug thing works. Thankfully I had the big "C" a few years ago. Could have been very expensive for me. I am back to normal now although some people I am sure, would disagree!

Production on the Camaro starts this October. It seems way too late to be starting to build a brand new engine in a car that starts production in a matter of months. Whatever it is I dont see how it could be for the Camaro.

This engine probably won't be in camaro in beginning. The question is which engine will replace once when it comes? Will it maybe be a top engine? Or something below?

You got that right! Castration would have been easier.

Not right away, I know a few of the engines and I would assume the 5 th. gen. will be later. To change the Plant from 4th. gen to 5th. gen is a major undertaking and will not happen over night!

All of them. It it the Generation 5 V8 engines. Just like generation IV replaced all the Generation III's. It's a new engine design incorporating Direct Injection and some other goodies.

Wow; this is pretty cool news. I'm eager to hear/read what the details of this engine are. It doesn't sound like it's going to make it into Camaro at launch, so I wonder what Father meant about forgetting what we know...

'Rag - I'm glad that you got the "C" taken care of. I've lost many family/friends to that horrible bug and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I just heard there is a guy who is a broadcast engineer who has actually developed a machine that can tune into certain C-cell frequencies that can actually destroy the cells by burning them up, with the help of Nano cells that are being developed. Regardless, I'm glad that has been corrected for you.

Isn't technology great?!
