I'm still of the opinion that sales of ZL1s will be lackluster considering what price range they'll have to sell for. The Z28 will be reborn, it's just a matter of timing with the Gen6. Mustang has committed it's 2015 model as the next generation. You would think GM would wait a year to make final touches to the Gen6, thus being a 2016 model. That leaves 3 model years for Gen5; 2013,2014,2015. I have to believe the Z28 will make its debut in the 2014 model year.

GM, as we all know, had tremendous difficulties to overcome just as the Camaro was to commence building. Development of performance models was slowed (hell, development of everything was slowed!). But plans were in place for an ultra-performance version to compete head-to-head with Brand F's version. What we now know as ZL1. Which, by its very timing, is proof of manpower/funding issues.

What is not known, publicly, is what firm plans there were for "something in between" the SS and the now-ZL1. A not-so-inconsequential 40%! With the announcement of the BOSS, whatever plans there were/are must have been dusted off and/or resusitated and/or accelerated. And what would that car's name have to be?

Only one answer...

...which creates one more question...

When?

The "rest of the story", I have full confidence, will play out, properly featured/equipped. Properly positioned/priced...

Because, as we have been reminded, "any car can be an SS, but only ONE deserves to be called Z/28"...

And that, my friends, is the lowdown truth as I see it!

Another fact is that anyone with an understanding of marketing knows you can't separate products too far in pricing.

Example Camaro $25K V6 - $31K SS - ? - $50K ZL1

There has to be an easy step up if you will to the next product to get the customer to stretch to the next pricepoint. In the example cited do you see anything missing?

Define 'lacklustre', because I see no reason why it won't outsell the GT500, which I think is about 4000-5000 units per year.

It will outsell the GT500!
It will also create interest in a completely different group of car buyers than those who usually show interest in Camaros.

With all the hype and barrage of updates on the ZL1, I would consider lackluster as less than 5% of overall sales. An entry level Corvette starts out at $50,000. Ford fans don't have to choose between a $50,000 Mustang and more expensive muscle car in their lineup. It certainly sounds like Ford is already making plans for the 2013 GT500 to have over 600 HP.

Didn't mean to sound bitter, but this is a Z28 forum. I'm just disappointed how much money in the development of the ZL1 could have gone into a dynamite Z28.

Maybe it ha$..."parallel development"...tranny/diff/axles/wheels/tires/brakes/aero will ALL be Camaro-validated, right? FE4 is a "done deal", 'cept for TwistyPete's upgrades (!!) which are now GMPP-saleable. LS7's "on the shelf"...

Stir...shake...blend...cook......ship!

My thoughts are in the same camp as yours Lowdown. I don't see why the Chevy Skunk Works would not be currently working on a black project such as that. Oh the possibilities.....

Lowdown, I think you are right on.....with all the parallel development...and the potential additional/more profitable sales...I would THINK that there would be a majr push to announce as soon as the ZL-1 is launched....

It boils down to, "What does a Z/28 require to trump the BOSS?"

1) Superior Handling/Cornering/Braking/"Performance"
2) Superior Power-to-Weight
3) Comparative Price Point
4) Driving Experience 2nd to NONE in its Class...with 5%+ less Curb Weight than ZL1

The mightier-but-weightier ZL1, whose price point takes it into GT 500 territory, can "lend" a good deal of technology and freshly-validated components, reducing/spreading costs over TWO versions instead of one.

So, for the ZEE, not many questions would remain...

1) Which engine? LS7 or "hot" LS3?
2) Which suspension? MR...optional?
3) Model identification? ZL1-style splitter/spoiler? Hood design/features (R/A, extracter)?
4) How many can we build/sell?!
