Well, I have experience with that level of compression, but not with a direct injection system. However I would assume that one of the reasons for 89 vs 93 octane would be due to the fact that the fuel is directly injected. The cpu is probably tuned for the lower octane's burn rate. Thus it knows when to inject it. With a higher rated fuel it would take longer to completely burn so it would most likely want to inject it sooner or at a higher pressure (if that were possible)

One note is Octane does NOT refer to the power in a gas fuel. Both chemicaly produce around the same energy when combustion takes place. Octane is more a resistance to detonation and auto-ignition. Volatility is in reference to the evap point of the fuel, not any relation to the power either.

Also being an all aluminum engine, with what appears to be a pent roof design chamber, should also be a massive help with the combustion process. There's alot to dig into here obviously. Thats one of the reason's I'm personally opting toward the v6.

Nope, and nope.

The CTS uses an identical engine -- and recomends REGULAR. In addition, the engine's engineers say the ECU was written for regular, tuned on regular, and will provide 0% improvement if you use premium.

So...on a stock V6 Camaro -- if you use premium, you're just wasting your money.

It is. And that's what the V6 camaro uses and the CTS uses.

As far as I know, the older, non-DI version of the 3.6L engine also uses regular 87 octane. Not sure if any version of that engine has ever needed premium.

They haven't. Poor guy was mis-informed, and has been throwing money away on premium. :(

I wish Utah thought 87 octane was "regular." Around here 'regular' is 85 octane.

Utah is 85? Do they have a Plus grade? use that 85 too low. That's B.S.

It's optimized for 87 but the computer can do things with timing to reduce knock but it will gimp your power a tiny bit.
