Not that I'm disagreeing with the rest of your post; only this little part. The Camaro is gunning to be a practical, everyday car. Something you can see in the grocery store parking lot, a car that can be driven to work every day...

Otherwise it's not a Camaro, and it won't sell very well at all.

honestly I think any car that over 3600 lbs is a pig and thus wouldn't really consider it as a option. the 350z is also a pig but if it had 400 hp it would be ok. I made an exeption in the camaros case because it appeals to me on a higher level than most cars being that I have owned 3 F bodys and have an attachment to them. I finaly settled on buying a used C5 Z06 wich will fit my current needs more but I will still keep the camaro in the top 3 for cars to get when I need that extra seat since thats they only reason I would buy a car with more than 2 seats. I decided in the end that 600 lbs + was not worth the extra 2 seats

Can someone explain to me why the camaro (2 door) would weigh more than a sedan, like lets say an impala SS (4 door). The impala weighs in at 3711 pounds. I understand that the larger engine weighs a lot but thats why i picked the SS because of its large 5.3 V8. If you asked me, a car with 2 doors would prob weigh a lot less than a 4 door.

and Scott has said earlier that new crash test standards have been more strict recently meaning more materials to make it even more safe.

Just another thought.....

If its the Zeta platform that makes it weigh a lot, the G8 doesnt weigh that much, just over 4K if i remember.

+1, maybe thats why the challenger weights so much

The Zeta platform is IRS first of all, and it's also VERY stiff, and rigid, making for nice handling/ride (See: G8 ) But 3995 for a V8 Sedan?...Some would call that Obese. I call it average, and not dissapointing in the least based on all these magazine, and driver reviews.

I wouldn't doubt if it's a small piece of it...but more likely - it's because it's riding on a large sedan chassis.

OK i have my C&D open in front of me here... their as tested weight came to 4020lbs. The camaro won't be in the BMW 5series size class either seeing as we've all seen the pics of the Camaro next to the Avenger and how petite the camaro looked in that pic. I would guess that this car will be around 3600-3800lbs. i understand that this is a heavy platform, but being a coupe should make this a lighter car... I see the back seat being big, but not as roomy as a Sedan's. I see the camaro being closer to the BMW 3 series in size according to the specs in my Jan 08 C&D and that came in at 3380lbs. I this being a heavier platform and all will put the camaro up to about 3600-3800 max... if it is any more than that something is wrong... The G8 is the same size as a Charger and a Crown Vic... if ya'll think the Camaro is going to be that big you got rocks in your head...

What is your basis on that? Because the G8 is as big as a 5 series sedan? different car. platforms can be modified... maybe another reason this car is taking so long to come out? If you can show me some sort of documentation to the concept's dimensions and then to the dimensions of another car i might listen, but other than that i'll just take what you're saying as speculation...

It's not quite a 5 series - but it's definitely not a 3 series, either. I'd say it falls nicely between the two. It's definitely smaller than the Avenger AND the Mustang (not counting width).

EDIT: I added the GTO's specs...somehow it slipped my mind the first go around.
Ok. looking at these number (thanks dragon) i would definitely say that the camaro can shave the 300lbs necessary to get it down to 3700 lbs (this is going by the G8's C&D 4020lbs as tested weight) The 3 series came in at 3300 and some change in it's C&D comparo and the 5 Series came in at just over 2 tons. I think we'll be good for weight people... this is just another "the sky is falling" thread... "keep the faith"!!!

Sure...but wouldn't you agree that it's as close as we can get at this point? And it shouldn't vary too much from the concept anyways. The dimension changes I remember were like, raise the roof some fraction of an inch, etc... It's the best we've got.
