ZL1 Driveshaft
Is the driveshaft on the ZL1 the same two-piece unit used on the SS or will it be a one piece unit? I can't recall it being specifically mentioned but I seem to recall seeing a picture of the undercarriage and thought it showed a two-piece shaft.

By looks of things looks like a two piece with a carrier in the middle.

That's what I thought but can't seem to find any underside pics of the ZL1. How well do we think that is going to hold up? I notice most of the higher horsepower modded SS cars tend to go to a one-piece shaft. I'm sure there is a reason.

I have 110% confidence it will hold up. If not, that is what the warranty is for!

I believe that pic is of a SS with an LSA engine cover on it. The dual exhaust instead of quad exhaust gives it away. Maybe not thoug..

Everything in the ZL1's drivetrain has been upgraded to handle the increased power.
To be honest, I don't know why people upgrade to single-piece driveshafts, I've never looked into it to determine a reason or advantage - I'm sure there is one, though. I do know that two-piece driveshafts tend to have better harmonics, thus better Noise/Vibration/Harshness from a factory-perspective...this is because there isn't a super-long pole wobbling (producing vibrations) at high rpms underneath the car. |

what's the reason for a two piece driveshaft?. I wonder why they just don't go to a solid enclosed shaft.

So if its just a vibration issue, seems to me a solid shaft would be zero vibration?

I found this neat read...pretty informative. http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/...h/viewall.html Again - I want to say I'm sure there's a reason some aftermarket builders use solid shafts...I've just never spent any time to look up why. |

Good article, and very informative info about drive shafts..(thank you).. but I`m not talking about a ` driveshaft``per say..I am talking about a ridgid shaft within a housing. There are no u-joints or lateral movement, so the shaft rides in bearings, so there would be no vibration if enough bearings are used for the length. Also clearance in the tunnel would be greatly increased because the shaft would be like 1.25`as opposed to a 3`inch driveshaft. Less spinning weight etc. like a corvette..
