Ipod "Touch" Coming To A Car Near You!
so with all these new innovations, Ipod Touch, Iphone, and that HP computer that has a touch screen...(among other things) when do you think touch screens will be a common feature in cars?...
such as having the center console for heating/cooling & audio systems etc. be touch screen... iirc the GT-R was supposed to have a screen for it's speedometer/rpm's etc (correct me if i'm wrong) - not touch screen but it Is an interesting innovation. would be rather interesting to see that sort've setup, + touch screen technology for various things in cars. what's your opinion?... discuss...

The Volt's center stack is kinda like that...no real buttons, just touch the controls and they'll light up.

I mean, have you ever had the screen on your iPod Touch fail? Mine did. The thing was a certifiable brick until I got it replaced. The same thing would happen to the entire console/dash if just the screen failed. Think of all the bad press that would get a company. The safe bet is to keep isolated buttons, but make them touch sensitive like an older iPod clickwheel. As for the volt, as I said above, they may not even have this yet. From what pictures I've seen, it's just a giant mass of buttons. |

We are just seeing the tip of hte iceberg regarding this technology. Once they have all of the bugs worked out and the cost comes down, we will eventually see it on everything. Give it 6 to 8 years.

Well, uh, the whole concept of a touch screen device is that the screen is the primary input for the device. So I guess we could see something of a physical-to-digital mashup of an interface..
But no iPod touch screen for your A/C. |

The Volt.
The center-stack 'buttons' are touch, like mentioned above(^). And I even think the Nav-screen is touch-based. Here: |

Actually, GM recently revised the center stack. Here's the latest design.

HOLY..
I came.. I stand corrected sirs. Well, there's your touch screen, bub. Now we need those ball thingys like the audis in iRobot. Then everything would be sweet. *now I KNOW the ball thingys already exist as body mods for audi TTs. But who wouldn't want to see GM's incarnation of this on a C7 or Gen6 Camaro? |

Those look like grade-B photoshops to me....look at the vents, and the caution button for instance.... |

The dash is the same. It's the center stack that's different. The old design had a display screen that wasn't integrated too well, and people who sat inside the Volt actually tried to fold it into the dash or rip it out. The new design has it integrated into the center stack a bit better, plus the vents are changed. They also added small ridges along some of the "buttons."

I hope there's an option for a black center stack. The white just doesn't do it for me. :-/
Other than that, that's a freakin' SWEET interior. |
