Horsepower which one do you state.

I was thinking about how people state there horsepower ratings. If someone owns a stock SS they state it has 400 - 425 HP. That is at the crank not the actual HP after drive train loss. Same thing with 2LT owners they state the 312 HP.
If someone upgrades there engine they then drop the at crank HP and go with at wheel hp. I would almost think that at crank would be more impressive. Well at least the number would be larger. So my question is which one do you state when asked. Is it the large number at the Crank or the ever impressive rear wheel number.

Just curious, thank you for the reply.

So is it the number that is larger at the time. Or is it the number you know of after a dyno? Does it matter to some, is it a smoke screen to others. Why do manufactures go with Crank instead of rear wheel. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.....

It depends on who you're talking to. Just your average Joe, who may not realize there is a difference, use the number at the crank (since that's what the manufacturers use). If it's an enthusiast, who might actually give a damn, use RWHP, if you know it.

I estimate how much it is after my current mods, but I always remind them that it's at the crank. I'd tell them what my RWHP is but I dont know what it is yet since I haven't dyno'd my car.

I say the power at the wheels and specify so. If it's an average joe, I'll add in what I estimate the crank HP to be.

This. But since my car is stock at the moment, 312 sounds better than 265. once I mod and dyno, I will probably use the RWHP.

For the non car person conversation I usually tell them the car is pretty damn fast and a lot of fun to drive. Everyone else gets the 415 hp at the wheels.
