Has anyone figured out what this is? Scares the crap out of you if you are not expecting it. I thought someone was tapping or knocking on the side of the car the first few times it happened.

So glad I did a search for this, I was wondering too. It seems to happen pretty much every time I start my car, maybe 2-300 yards down the road or at the first or second stoplight. Seem to remember it always being at a stop but maybe that's just the only time I can hear it with no road noise.

I'm soooo glad I wasn't the only one hearing this! I was at the dealer getting some other work done when the tech noticed that sound (I had already been hearing it but figured no one else ever would). He said that shouldn't be making that noise and it sounds like some type of solenoid engaging and disengaging. Haven't had a chance to bring it back to have them look at it. But if it's happening on this many cars then I'm not gonna worry about it. I figure it's something to do with the fuel or other electronic control system.

There was another thread about this a long time ago. Fbodfather told us that it was the the evap vent valve. I'm glad someone remembered.

Look, buddy, I read up to post #12 and then made my post. Then read above my post and noticed people talking about the answer, so calm the hell down.

You're complaint about people posting after the answer has been posted (did you even think that maybe we didn't see that!?) is hypocritical considering you came in this thread just to post CRAP about people posting CRAP. Keep up the good work

now for the "flap" sounds that come from under hood?

about 20 seconds after I exit the car.. I hear an obvious flap sound coming from under the hood at the very front of the car... like something is returing to its original position. anyone?
