I suppose the larger question is...Is there room in the lineup for a Z/28? With the ZL1 besting both the old Z/28 and GT350R in track prowess (I suppose that's up for debate still but if Ring times are a decent benchmark...) then what could a street legal Z/28 do? Is there room? It's getting very blurry between the best Camaro performance and some of the track flavored Corvette's (GS w/Z07, Z06).
If the Z/28 was a Camaro "halo" car when it came out in 2014 then what would a new one do for the model? The new ZL1 already proved it's quite a performer. What's left? |

The ZL1 is a GT car. It does everything well. The Z/28 will be singularly focused on track performance. The Alpha platform is probably the single biggest change in the ZL1. Give the Z/28 the same platform and a slight power bump and it should be fine.

If they can shave 75 lbs off for a 6th gen Z/28 vs a 6th gen 1LE I think that will be a big accomplishment. I thought for MT best drivers car they listed the 1LE at ~3738lbs. Not sure how much fuel that included. But if a 6th gen Z/28 with the same fuel in it would come in around 3660 lbs I think that would be huge.

Technically the cars that were raced in Continental tire by guys like Stevenson were Z28.R and they have big Pratt and Miller badges on them. Maybe the car we keep seeing will be called "GT4" not "Z28?"

Z/28 will be a street legal race car. This GT4 would be track only

The Z/28 will be a 1LE chassis with weight reduction. The motor is a great unknown. It might be a modified LT1 or something shared with one of the 2018 Corvettes. I don't see it being available before September. It will be pricey as before, not many will be built and it will not be a good DD. Perfect for collectors and racers, not for ordinary Joe's.

I dont think we can classify it as either ZL1 or 1LE chassis. Which is pretty much just Drivetrain differences.
They Z/28 will have its own unique suspension and drivetrain. Something not available on other models of the Camaro line

If anything, it will be sharing the ZL1 hood and fenders with a slightly modified fascia, for the dive planes.

A street legal Z/28 probably would need too many mods to be actually raced...roll bar, changes to satisfy various class requirements, etc.... Weekend track events, absolutely, the same as any SS or ZL-1 could participate in.... If this GT4 can be purchased ready to go for racing, as with Stevenson for example, it could probably never be street legal. Depending on the details and price, some may buy a GT4 just for weekend track duty, no street use, no big-time racing....If they come out with track lap times like the Ring, Willow Springs, etc., and it outdoes the ZL-1, a GT4 may make a Z/28 less likely.... I think the Grand Experiment of the 5thGen Z/28 was disappointing in sales and may not be repeated, unless, as others have said, a truly unique and stand alone engine comes with it to attract buyers....Also a Z/28 would have to be the best lap time performer of them all... |
