Low Gas Warning = ~2.5 to 3 gallons left?

Had my Camaro going on just over 2 weeks now, and yesterday on the way to work didn't fill up because it was telling me I had a good ~80 miles left to go before empty. Now, my trip to work is about 27 miles, so I figured I had enough to get me there and back with plenty left over.

On the return trip from work it got down to 50 miles left, then shortly after the low gas warning came on. I didn't feel like chancing it (I thought maybe the miles left thing was mis-calculating for all I knew) so I pulled off the highway at the next exit and filled up. Filled 16.135 gallons, so the tank should have had just under 3 gallons in it before filling up.

Is that how its supposed to be? Just want to know just how much time I have to get gas before I truly run out after the warning comes on.

It comes on when it drops below 50 miles left. I don't think it's a fixed volume, just the calculated mileage.

Hmmm... ok. Was just worried on the road because the actual gauge was showing on the first red empty line and was damn close to the second red line which I would wager means running on fumes. Didn't seem like I would get 50 more miles out of it.

Just how accurate is the miles left estimator? Assuming of course you don't all the sudden radically change your driving habits.

When I first got the Camaro I put a 5 gallon gas can in the trunk and ran the poor car dry just to see how far it would go. I got 60 miles on the highway after that stupid warning before she clunked out. Now I know exactly how far I can push my luck.

Your fuel booster pump should be inside a gas tank, and she is lubricated by a gas in it. Run out of fuel few more times and buy a new one

My Low range light comes on with around 40 miles range left. My low fuel light comes on about 5 miles after that. I usually drive 20 miles AFTER the low range light comes on. My Camaro rarely takes 17 gallons even then. I always run my Camaro as low as I feel is safe. It's a company car and they pay for one tank of gas a week so I might as well get the most of it.

On my diesel it chimes and a large 50 miles to empty comes up on the display. The number starts counting down the miles as you drive. Of coarse you never want to run a diesel engine dry.

Never worry about this. Always fill her up when it reaches 1/4 tank .

I've done this with every car I've ownd that has the low fuel light when I bought the car......Looked up the tank capacity in the manual....when to the gas station and filled it all the way up.....drove the car like nornal till the fuel light can on and pulled into the first station I could find, usually with in a mile or two, and filled her up.....then I knew how how much I had/have left when the light comes on.

and to the OP, you are right on the money....at least it is in my car....about 2.5 to 3 gals left when the light comes on.

It may be so , but , we need to calculate how much he has saved by running really low on gas [less weight ] in the car equals to more miles per gallon right /

Seems very accurate to me. Low = 40 miles left. I ran it till just under that 40 and filled the 18 gallon tank. 17.91 gallons to fill. So it seems to me you can trust it. Obviously if your driving it hard you're going to use up more gas.
