New LT1 Corvette - why "LT1" ?
I understand the LS series : LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, LS7 and LS9
But GM has already used the "LT1" label in the 90's as well as the LT4. So using "LT1" again does not make sense. Just saying...the specs on this new base motor seem amazing with VVT and flipping from a 6.2 to a 3.1 V4 to save on gas ..very cool.. It should have had a new name maybe LS10 would have been better ... Bob |

It's a new generation. They used LS before the current LS series already

why are you too concerned with what they call the engine? Does it change anything? All the names used by many GM vehicles were used before like the Z06, ZR1, ZL1, Stingray, COPO etc...

They recycle the designations all the time, you can still buy the new version of the big block too, this is the "new" version of the LT1. At least that's how I think of it. The Z06 and ZR1 (if made) will most likely have a similar designation like the LT7 or LT9.

The LT-1 was the ultimate 350 cu in V8, becoming available in 1970. It used solid lifters, 11:1 compression, the '178' high-performance camshaft, and a 780 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetor on a special aluminum intake, with rams' horn exhaust manifolds in the Chevrolet Corvette, Delco transistor ignition and a low-restriction exhaust factory rated at 370 bhp in the Corvette, and 360 bhp at 6000 rpm and 380 lb-ft at 4000 in the Camaro Z28[7] (the NHRA rated it at 425 hp for classification purposes). Redline was 6500 rpm but power fell off significantly past 6200 rpm. The LT-1 was available in the Corvette, and Camaro Z28. Power was down in 1971 to dual-rated 330 bhp, 255 nethp and 360 lb-ft of torque with 9:1 compression, and again in 1972 (the last year of the LT-1, now rated using net only, rather than gross, measurement) to 255 bhp and 280 lb-ft.
The "LT1" designation was later reused on a Generation II GM EFI 350" engine in late 1991, the LT1. Also, this is the 5th generation of the small block. Every generation they seem to resurrect old RPOs |

I understand the reuse but the question is why reuse it?
Marketing. My guess is GM felt "LT1" would please the middle age generation that buys corvettes. Put a comfort factor on the car and not "too much change". Especially since it has tech that old heads may not like such as the cylinder deactivation. A new name would bring more dislike to the engine. Personally, I don't like the name LT1. They should have picked something cool like LXV. But again, its about marketing to a certain demo. |

The original LT-1 was introduced in 1970...
Then in 1992 (22 years later) they introduced the 1992 LT1 with a revolutionary new system called Optispark ignition. Now in 2014 (22 years later) they introduced the 2014 LT1 with (for the history of SBC generations) a revolutionary new system called direct injection. I see the pattern.
