I makes me scratch my head. it is why I will never say anthing too negative about the GT500. 1. I really think it a good car just has it own issues to be ballanced and not just really powerful and fast. 2. I have no seat time in one to ad anything to the coversation. over there you have people that have not driven either car or only the GT500 with very strong opinions on how they both drive. So to say that people who have driven the cars are stupid and your smart yet have never driven the car is just down right retarded. I do really want to eventually see someone run the standard GT500 coupes. If I would have bought one that was all I could affoard. the standard GT500 coupe gets no love in any of these tests. if you would just buy the standard coupe with the TP and not the PP which would have been 57,995 what would that get you around the track.

I too wold like to see a base model run around a track though, not for bragging reasons or to stroke my ego and combat it with others... but to see how big of an improvement the shocks and diff really provide.

Only the ZL1 has mag shocks, The 1LE has standard shocks. Both revolutions of the camaro ans stang will be sick regardless.

I plan on installing a Fays2 watts link. From my understanding its a huge difference. Not as much as say a Griggs kit but huge for stability.

I had a Griggs kit on my 96 Mustang Cobra. It was not cheap in 1996. The solid rear axle and chassis flex has to be improved upon. Under hard useage in corners the axle would shift and the only cure was Griggs stuff.I also was using Global west caster/camber plates and Saleen sway bars. It was a night and day difference as I discovered during a SVT sponsored track day at Willow Springs on the streets course! I do not understand why Ford did not stick with the IRS platform? They did it for what one year? I'm guessing re tooling and cost? It will be a great experience taking my ZL1 to the track and improving and tweeking it a bit. It doesn't need a lot. Now I understand why the new cars costs as much as they do. |

It's only a tenth up on the ZL1, but 4.5 MPH faster at the exit. Tracking out all the way lengthens the setup time for the subsequent left-hand turns. To comply with American Le Mans series requirements, VIR added candy-cane FIA-style curbing in several corners. Exploiting the extra-wide track surface here is hampered by Sector 2's combination of quick grade changes and large-radius corners that challenge the 458's suspension. Excessive contact with curbing upsets every car, including the 458, increasing Sector-2 split times. A light nibble of each curb with the outside edges of the tires yields the quickest pass. The last Sector-2 corner is critical to a good lap. Exiting too wide botches the entry to the next bend, a terrifying 90-mph left. Best results come from sacrificing a little speed in the esses to achieve maximum velocity in the next turn. The little hill leading into Sector 3 further tests the 458's brakes. It's the site of the highest deceleration spike: -1.18g. A quick stab of the gas on the downhill cuts a tenth off the 458's sector time. Have patience in the final turn and you're rewarded with 100 mph shortly thereafter. We didn't touch the 458's brakes in Sector 4. An early upshift into third gear is the only acceleration reduction necessary. The Ferrari's aplomb at the cornering limit is what makes it quickest here. A quick and narrow switchback unsettles the 458's chassis before the flowing road of Sector 4. A groove in the track and some banking aid the 458's speed in Sector 5's long right-hander. The result: an impressive 1.2-g cornering limit. The track is slightly off-camber leading into Sector 5's start, requiring precise vehicle placement. |
