Exclamation ENGINE RUNAWAY - (reving without touching throttle)

2SS - 6M - 5800 miles.

I was driving into work this morning and i had cruise on. there is a big hill coming into town so i hit the clutch (turns off cruise) and slid into neutral and coast. I had been coasting for about 5-10 seconds and my engine starts reving... i'm thinkking WHAT THE HECK?
it hits about 3K so i tap the gas pedal (in the old days something might be stuck, but since this is all electric i'm thinking the switch migh be going haywire). that tap on the pedal brought it to 5K and i let off. it falls back to about 3500 and then starts to climb again... i hit the key and shut it down.
i coasted a little farther and started it back up and it was fine.

i have no idea of what just happened, but if my wife had been driving she might have freaked out... beware, and tell others to be prepared.

i truly hope that this is a once only occurance and it affects no one else. (and not me again either)

i am going to call the dealer later today.

anybody else have this happen?

that means that the mirror is 38.75% the size of the vertical windshield...
it sure seems like the ratio could be better... just sayin....

not with my camaro - no.

i had that happen with my BMW couple times (automatic). once it got stuck at full throttle in traffic...that was scary, not sure what caused it. The other time it lunged forward while i was parking, that time it was caused by a chip missing in a fan blade catching the throttle body cable.

that car has tried to kill me too many times...

Something similar happens to me rarely on my truck. But it happens almost instantly after depressing the clutch when using cruise control. My engine will rev up for a couple seconds. It is a computer bug, I think. If you can get your car to do this repeatedly, I'd take it in. Try disabling the cruise control using the controls on your steering wheel if it happens again (after depressing the clutch), then at least you can determine if it is the cruise control doing it.

Welcome to "throttle by wire" ie no physical link era. Nice idea to tap it but, you dont have a choke so not much to get "stuck". The butterfly is electric motor driven. Have you washed it or been in rain recently?

There were SEVERAL Mustang crashes happened due to unintended throttle when the 05's came out. It might happen again so have plan!

Sounds like the cruise was still engaged.... Either turn it off first or tap the brake... See if you can duplicate the problem, and report back your findings...

Check your floor mat- Happened to me once. Turned the key off and pulled off the interstate and found the floor mat had slid into the gas pedal.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, however, my '95 LT1 M6 would do that. I won't go so far as to say that's common, because I've never asked a friend to do that, but maybe the dealer can answer if that's right or not. I wouldn't suggest doing that again though, lol.

It's a defective TIP sensor or loose wire to said TIP sensor. Throttle Input Position, I think. That also explains the problems you're having at WOT.

you may be onto something here! thanks!

i cut the cruise with the clutch ALL the time in ALL my vehicles with a stick. has NEVER been an issue.
I highly doubt it was the cruise because upon taping the clutch and putting in neutral, the engine went back to idle 5-10 seconds before it started revving. (but i will try to duplicate by doing the same again)

thanks all for the input!

I had a loose wire on the TIP sensor of my SRT-4 and I had the same problems you're having. Good luck!
