Maybe your car was in the process to down shift because it felt the elavation increase and you didn't turn off the cruise in time to drive the hill manualy?

is it possible that like other said the cruise did not disengage instantly, but not start reving for 5-10 seconds because you did not go below the set speed, and then at that point it began to try to compensate. I always tap the brake to turn off cruise, I understand that the clutch should turn it off too but maybe it just didnt pick it up the clutch motion for some reason. still is a problem, im just trying to think of what could cause it.
