I always follow the oil life indicator and change when I hit about 25%. I'm at 11,000 miles and have only changed the oil once. My indicator says 38% remaining now, so I may go in early this time around since I drive the heck out of it and it's so hot and grueling out there right now!

I did my first oil change at 470 miles.

The oil from my V6 was a dark coffee color and I did see some metal scrapings at the bottom, but not much.

I don't know if it did any good for the engine in the long run, but only cost me 40 bucks for the oil(Mobil 1 Full Synthetic) and filter(Mobil 1), and definitely couldn't hurt.

I am now going by the oil gauge and it is currently around 68% at 3000 miles.

I had my oil changed 1st time at the dealership today at 4700miles, a V6 man. I was told by the mechanic at the dealership every 5k would be fine. When I went to pay I was told $68.oo WOW, I pay $38 for my AVALANCHE. The dept. manager was close by and heard me, looked at my ticket and said they put in Synthetic (?) ok I didn't have a clue...He changed my bill to the $38.00. My husband said Synthetic is really good oil and worth the higher price. I read this post because I was going to ask you guys about what oil is the best. I never thought to look at my oil %. THANKS!!!

Did mine at 1200 miles (LS3). the dealer had a sh*t fit about me wanting it that early. Probably over kill but who cares the first one was free. I had a hard time watching some punk kid car porter drive it off, i'm sure he hit the skip shift and probably didnt know what to do. It looked like he was struggling.

F**king hate dealerships. I hope to get some ramps and do it myself for the rest of its long life.

You'll want to change it early that first time. Get all the filings and gunk out from the break-in period.

After that, you can just do what the oil life monitor tells you to. In SOME cases...that could be over a year between oil changes...(but in those cases, you'll at least want to get it changed once a year to prevent it from aging)

Dealer threw in the first one for free so I did my first one at around 2200 miles. Just did the second one myself at 5213 mile and switched to Mobile 1 synthetic. Piece of cake.

I just did the oil change myself today at 1480 miles with Mobile 1 synthetic and Mobile 1 filter and will follow the oil life indicator from now on, but I will check the oil everytime I fill up the car with gas just to make sure it looks good.

3000 miles on stock oil is too long IMO. Get synthetic into that motor between 500-1500.

I am at 1400 miles and probably will not be able to wait past 1500 for the first oil change. I will be using Valvoline Synpower which also has a 300,000 mile engine guarantee, but you have to change it at less than 4,000 miles to maintain the warranty.
On my Z06, the oil life monitor shows to change at around 4500 miles, so the Camaro will probably be close to that too.

Mobil 1 quality does not seem to be what it used to be, and there are a lot of other good fully synthetic oils on the market that meet or exceed Mobil 1 performance, especially on the standard wear test.
