First, you don't say what about AFM is holding you back. I agree with the earlier posts from the guys who have it. It is invisible, doesn't impact performance and you will basically on go into AFM mode when crusing and generally at 45 mph or so. And when you put the spurs to it, it is truly instant that you will be in V8 mode.
And I will of course continue to be the stick in the mud - if you do an aftermarket tune you will void you powertrain warranty. It's not worth it.

I was reading this thread and wondering what was taking so long for somebody to bring up the most important point.

Just another one here vouching that I can't even tell when the AFM is on. No one expects your car to sound like a roaring, snarling beast at 45 mph.

I have tried to figure out when it's kicking in and have no clue. I can't hear or feel a difference, there is no hesitation when I accelerate or anything.

I have an automatic SS now. Mine was not invisible or transparent. I could feel it as well as hear it. The AFM was always switching off cylinders at low speeds and highway cruising (68-72 mph). Anytime the load on the engine changed, cylinders activate and deactivate (hills, traffic flow etc). At first I thought it was the trans shifting back and forth between gears (5th and 6th).
It is louder now that I have a Magnaflow exhaust. I relpaced the exhaust because the sound of the stock does not match the profile of the car IMHO. I usually tap shift in manual mode to avoid it. I just completed a 1000 mile trip and gas mileage was actaully better in M6 than in D mode. So why do you even need it? I have an automatic I drive manually because of the noise and jfeel. Not to mention I gave up 23hp. The tap shift is ok most of the time but if you need to shift while cornering you have to have the correct hand/steering wheel orientation. It would have been nice to have the ratchet shifter and the tap shift in the console like most sports cars. One way to overcome the sound is turn up the stereo LOL! In the customer survey from GM I ripped on this one and only point about the car. I very much wish I had bought the manual shift. Check this thread called "Does Your AFM Make You Sick?" |

Just take someone with you to drive it off the lot and don't practice in front of the Ford dealer!

I can't suggest anything. I'm more interested in why you don't like AFM?
