New camaro in a wind tunnel (video)
Hopefully not a repost. Accidentally caught it on the science channel while flipping channels. Sorry for the low quality pics. Found a video on the internet as well.

Nice. I like the bit about computational fluid dynamics at the end. Too bad its not going to be able to simulate a car very well for quite a while though. The shape is too complex and the resulting flow is too turbulent. I've done some engineering simulations on my computer for school, mainly stress analysis, and it puts a crazy load on the computer to do a low quality simulation. And that is for conditions that are easily understood. Fluids are extremely unpredictable.
Anyway, very cool video

Cool post, thanks. Did you check out the other vids they had on the Camaro? Loved the one when they started it up and reved the engine, I hope GM puts that exhaust on all the camaros.

Yes, I know that it is used but I don't believe that they can get as good of data as they can from a wind tunnel. They can get a rough idea and a good visualization. Wind tunnel testing is still used very extensively because it gives very accurate results. When I took fluid dynamics my prof told us that turbulent flow is fairly simple to analyze but amlost impossible to predict. A racecar will have fairly smooth (laminar) flow over most of the car. The calculations are much simplier but it still takes alot to calculate. A production car isn't as sleek, there are more things sticking out, and other things like that. That will cause more turbulent flow and therefore decrease the accuracy of the results. You will still get results but they may not be right.

Oh, and I just thought of something: this video confirms that the new camaro will look like the concept. I know that it has been said, but this is proof. They would not be doing wind tunnel testing on something that will be way off from the production model.

I think they just look for the smoke going over the car without much resistance...basically...?

You can do that and it gives a good idea of the overall flow as you move the smoke wand. It shows whats good and whats bad, but those terms are purely subjective. The other thing to do is to have lots of little holes in the surface linked to pressure sensors. These readings allow you to calculate the drag. This data is used by engineers to improve efficiency/performance. They are both useful but for different purposes.

Nice video. The only thing is they were talking about wind tunnels and not Camaros =[. Oh well, was still cool to see a new Camaro being wind tested.

I guess I had it comming. But how much can you clearly see in that pic? I know that its similar but you can't see the nose which has a huge impact on aero.
