I believe he's right on the money. Being able to spin an engine real fast (ie, horsepower) is great - it allows for wonderfully long rpm ranges in which to shift, carve corners, and hold high speeds....but if the torque isn't there - it won't be able to get out of it's own way.

I used to hear a different tq/hp quote...something like "torque gets you there, horsepower keeps you going".

Technically...no engine produces horsepower; they're all generators of torque (twisting force). It's a made-up metric we created to compare a spinning machine's ability to do a given amount of work to that of the more popular tool at the time: a horse.

Besides...hp doesn't squash you into your seat or roast your tires. That's all torque, my friend!

Oh and Torque rules!
Gotcha. Is it an SAE-certified engine?

I have a hard time believing the LRA in the Mustang increases drivetrain efficiency so much so that a lower crank-power engine can produce more rear-wheel power than the LS3...Unless the published number is underrated...which is a realistic possibility unless the engine was SAE-certified.

The LS3's L92 cylinder heads are a marvelous high performance design and can take in much more air than the engineers will allow due to the tame cam grind, intake plenum and fuel delivery system. It's not restricted per se, just underfed with fuel and air going in. Chevy engines, traditionally even back with the generation 1 small blocks, were underpowered and responded surprisingly well with a bigger cam, intake, fuel delivery and street headers. Same goes for the LS3. It needs a more aggressive cam, larger intake plenum, MAF, fuel injectors and round tube tuned exhaust "manifolds". This can be done and kept within EPA reg's. It should be done from the factory IMHO and leave little room for the SEM's. I think it's a good guess that Ford builds theirs on a more agressive scale, however I have never put any time or effort into high performance Ford products.

I would suggest that HP sells cars, Torque sells trucks and lap times win races.

This just in...

Dateline: Montgomery Alabama-

A formal request was made, today, for the Governor to officially change the name of this great State. Seems as though a State Business Development request was received that, if the State officially changes its name, an influx of Business Capital from the States of Texas and Michigan will be forthcoming. This request was made on behalf of PEDDERS USA, and it's princpal, Mr. Peter Basica. The name change suggested?

SLAMABAMA

No official response has been made but, since this is an election year, it is felt that, perhaps, the suggestion will be put on the ballet as a public referendum...

It's probably one of the better looking city cars out there. The EV variant could be pretty fun to drive...
