Not really. Every pump will shut off at a slightly different point. If you're not going back to the exact same handle on the same pump at the same station, pointing the same direction, it will be slightly off. That's where driving a much longer distance will help average out the differences inherent in the mechanical shut-offs in the pump handles (and a host of other factors). Do a tank-by-tank check.

JohnnyBfromPeoria has it right. You could get a half gallon difference in the click-off point on two properly adjusted pumps (let alone one that's maladjusted), which will make a huge difference in a 35 mile test but only a moderate difference in a 350 mile test.

average 21.7 mpg about 50/50 between city and highway. Car has 2200 miles (oil change at 1000 miles) and milage improved about 2 mpg for the last 2 fill-ups. Last round trip to seattle (about 200 miles from my front door) average 28.7 mpg (according to car) doing 70-75 most of the way. Needless to say I am very pleased with that number.

Finally got my car. Second tank was 16.5 with 100% city driving.
I was giving someone a ride and stated I was dissappointed with my mileage. He observed that the way I was driving he was surprised it was that good.
I have to admit, that I love to accelerate in this car!!!!!!

I took a road trip from Wichita to Lawrence to Kansas City and back last Friday - Saturday. For the 426 mile trip, mostly highway at 72 mph the average for the trip was 26.6 mpg. I am well pleased with that performance! Prior to the city portion, on the trip up to Lawrence the average was 28.6 mpg at 72 mph for 162 miles.

City definitely takes a toll, but heck, I love getting into the pedal!!!!

the iPhone has a great app its called road trip, when you go to fill up, you type in how many gallons you put in, and odometer and fuel cost, and on your next fill up you do it again and it will give you the average

A calculator can do the same thing.

Top off this week. Set odometer trip to "0". Next week top off again, take those gallons, and divide by trip miles.

(I'm just razzin' you)

Why would you want that when the onboard computer measures the exact amount of fuel flowing through the system?

Any manual measurement will be flawed. The outside temperature, humidity, fuel station pump pressure will all cause the amount of fuel added to "full" to vary.

Onboard fuel economy computers are often wrong. Accuracy for them is not a large engineering priority.

Manual measurements can be controlled to reduce (but not eliminate) flaws. Outside temperature doesn't matter because the fuel is stored underground where the temperature is stable. Not sure how humidity affects it, but I'd be interested to find out. Pump pressure should be the same if you always use the same pump.

In the end isn't the money you spend for the miles you drive the important part? That can be measured very accurately at the pump.

Temp and humidity directly effect the expansion of fuel within YOUR tank, thereby effecting the amount need to fill. Thus, in warmer weather your manual cals will be overstated.

Regardless, everybody drives the way they drive. It really doesn't matter if a car gets 21, 22, 23, or 24 mpg, etc... If a few mpgs matters to someone, they shouldn't buy a Camaro. Perhaps a Yaris or something, but not a V6 or V8 Camaro...

BTW, my manual measurement on the most recent trip quoted above came out to be 27.8 vs. 26.6 auto computer, likely largely due to the fact that when I filled up it was 95 degrees outside. Well above ground temp...

I have a 2LT 6speed Manual and all my driving is city. 17.5mpg and I'm a lead foot sometimes, only for the break-in. I just reached 1500 miles so we will see how she does now.

changing the mufflers alone ( or up to the catback) seem to be getting people 31-35 mpg on the highway

At what expense?

Considering the expense of changing your exhaust system, how many miles does it take at a 10% improvement in fuel economy to recoup the money spent on the exhaust?
