Id recommend the kinda car I learned to drive in a 2001 honda civic. Course the one I learned to drive in was a 4 door so I guess you'd have to get him like a 2005 or 2006 civic coupe.

If he's real serious about daily driving a 40 year old car and fixing it up as he go's I hope he has road side assistance and wont mind being without a car for sometimes weeks on end due to the never ending repairs especially if he's going to put a lot of miles on it and drive it on the highways. I'd get a dependable set of wheels so he can get to school and work everyday w/o incident.

Old cars (40 year's old) as daily drivers for young kids isnt such a smart decision now days unless they are die hard gear heads that don't mind living for their classic car and spending every last penny on it.

I say get the cobalt and get to school/work and make that $$$$

This.

This is what my dad surprised me with when I was sixteen (eighteen now). It's a very nice starter car and I highly recommend it.

I would pass on the vette for a 16 year old. I think you can find lots of good options for a 16 year old for under 10k.

My son is 2 years old but this is something I have always thought about.. well since 2 years ago. What would be his 1st car?

In MY case. I want him to have a RWD car so he understands the physics of it but also something that is safe and moderate power. Not a V8 for sure.

So, with that in mind... I would look into the 4th gen V6 Fbody. great safety ratings for their time.
yes! that is exactly it. we have, that he can drive, a 2007 jeep grand Cherokee and the camaro. where we live, the jeep fits in the lane and that's about it, so its not his driving im worried about its the people around him. but i agree give them something they want to drive, they might be a little more inclined to take care of it. IMO.

A used Jeep Grand Cherokee would be a great choice.. They are safe, have great overall vision while driving, and take some time to get up to speed which is good for a beginner driver.

What exactly are your plans for this car? A 16 year old in a classic is a dangerous combo...they aren't reliable (the cars) and they're relatively unsafe...especially when struck by a modern vehicle. So if it's a commuter/daily driver...I'd recommend you stay away from anything more than 5 years old.

Is it a long-term vehicle? Or something to get him through a couple years before he gets a "real" car?

That said...a project car would be awesome to have for you two. As a project, though...it really wouldn't be a good daily driver. And you'd have to seriously commit to working on it, or else it'll become a hunk of metal in your garage...

I like my Cobalt. I can't say anything bad about it. It's been incredibly reliable, I get 35mpg on average (mostly hwy driving), I think it looks pretty good, and it's got a little pep for an economy car. You might look into a Focus, Pontiacs (Grand Am, or Prix...can never remember which one is which), or if you want to go pre-2005...check out the Cavalier...just make sure you tie the muffler up.

I just saw that. I love being late to threads...

The G5 is basically a Cobalt in Arrowhead clothing. It'll be a good car!
