ZL1 brake kit for track days - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

Anyone swapped to a ZL1 brake kit (front and rear) on the SS or 1LE for better braking at track days? I'm thinking of doing a big brake kit or just swapping to ZL1 rotors, calipers and pads. I know the rears are the same, mostly concerned with the front. I don't want to swap, I want an upgrade. I already have SS lines for clutch and brakes, brake ducts, SRF fluid, good tires, separate PS reservoir suspension upgrades...a good number of track days just trying to see what makes sense next. Thanks in advance. Will the 2 piece rotor and extra size make it worthwhile on track? Mostly at VIR.

I'm intending on the swap early this year. Several have done it already. My goal is better heat management, and a 2 piece with more surface area and larger calipers will certainly help.

Hopefully some others will chime in with actual feedback. Search around a bit you'll find some posts on it.

I have a set just saying ... I bought a ZL1 sold my SS and never installed them... they have 17 miles on them from 17 ZL1 in perfect condition.. I’m including the oem pads too and are included. I have them boxed and ready to go.

It's a definite upgrade but still needs brake ducts. These fat pigs like to fade and the stickier your tires the faster they do. So it depends on how track focused you want to get. There are better BBK options but cost benefit goes down, the ZL1 setup is an excellent option for a reasonable budget. When you add up the parts with a real track pad you're looking at 1800ish versus 5000ish. That difference is a lot of pads and caliper rebuilds.

Thanks for the feedback. The stock brakes are fine but I think I can do better for a little more cost and stay well below the BBK prices. I'm trying to stick with street tires so things don't get out of hand. It's enough fun at VIR without moving to slicks, BBK, cage, etc...So far I'm managing to keep everything cool enough.

I have switched the front works great
If you all ready have the rear brembos they are the same size on the Ss as the zl1 on the rear
I have been using the racing brake 2 pice rotor and it has held up fine

Just ordered ZL1/CTS-V front rotors, calipers, SS lines and 2x caliper hw kits from Amazon.

Total for that was $1349 before taxes, free shipping.

ZL1 setup on mine SS (stainless) lines too with fluid upgrade...

I have the CTS-V 6 pistons, which are the same as the ZL1's but cheaper per other threads. SS rears are same as CTS-V/ZL1. Fronts are a definite improvement on the track. You will feel more in control in the braking zones.

If you rebuild try to get a set of vented pistons from the Z06 Steel rotor car they are supposed to reduce heat by 80 F or C I cant remember.

I did the fronts on my 2012 SS. Zl1 two-piece rotors, CTS-V Brembo six-piston calipers, SS brake lines, track pads, Motul 660 fluid. Noticeably better braking. I'm on sticky tires, so heat builds towards end of lap sessions. Need to put in ducts. Still, much better on the track than before.

the 6 piston brakes don't stop any "better", they just resist fade longer. Z28 inner wheel wells and ducts really help

also if you go with the Corvette calipers, they are already red and match your 1LE rears.
