Torn Between ZL1 and SS Convertible?
For months i have been planning on waiting for the new ZL1, but I drove a SS Convertible a couple of weeks ago and loved it. It took away all the things I did not like abotu my coupe at first which was the poor visability and feeling of claustrophobia which I eventually ogt over in the coupe, but still it was refreshing. But, now my dealer, who has my deposit and tax credit, just got in a 2012 Inferno Orange Metallic 2SS Convertible, with IOM interior upgrade, white rally stripes, a hurst shifter, polished wheels, RS Package, etc... all the bells and whistles.
I am so tempted to just get it and call it a day. After todays pics of what seems to be a ZL1 2.0 or a Z28 there is just so much to take in and not enoguh info for the ZL1 at this point. I feel like GM will just keep upping the ante with this car before it is even out , and that the only reason I must have the ZL1 is because it is the big bad Camaro. Thoughts?

There will ALWAYS be a bigger, better car. Even in the Camaro's own stable. Time tends to do that ...so if the only reason you want the ZL1 is because it's the "best"...my advise would be to get the convertible, because otherwise you're chasing a goal that can't be achieved - it'll drive you nuts. I've had the pleasure of riding, and they driving in a convertible since the last Fest...and I'm very impressed with it. If I didn't want the look of the hardtop so much, I'd seriously consider the 'Vert. It seems to solve a lot of your quips with the car...and it's obviously less expensive to buy and maintain... So........ Do you want the epitome of Camaro performance...for now? Or do you want that free, open-air flavor of our favorite car? |

I was in the same position you're in. You can tell by my sig what I chose. The ZL1 will be awesome, but the drop top is awesomer!
I fall in love with my car over and over again everytime i drive around with the wind in my hair. If you put a vert SS and a ZL1 next to each other, most of the car guys/gals will look at the ZL1, but 99% of the rest of the world will drool over the vert. Honestly by the time the ZL1 comes out i should have my Whipple on the Ginger and be able to leave a stock ZL1 in my dust!

Personally I hate convertibles so it will be either the 2SS or ZL1 for me.
Waiting to see the pricing, options, color and other things on the ZL1 to make my decision. |

Which speaks to you more? If you don't have a use for the performance it sounds like ZL1 will offer, nor do you expect to actually be able to get close to using it, perhaps it isn't necessary. You can make SS every bit as good as ZL1 will likely be. We have MANY Sponsors that can help you with that. It seems like visibility is the most important factor and if waiting for the possibility of a ragtop ZL1 is out of the question, I really don't think you can go wrong with SS. It won't take much for that car to really get you in trouble so I really don't think you would be missing out on much.
Good luck.

Well why not have the best of both worlds and get this. I couldn't wait to see if gm would come out with a zl1 vert so I had to do it my self.

What about a convertible ZL1. I would bet $1000 that they will be building one.

I love it. I did order this car way before the zl1 was announced , and yes I really thought long and hard about my decision when I heard of the zl1. All in all I'm glad I stuck with my first plan , I don't know if I could deal with waiting to see if they would build a zl1 vert. I think I waited long enough for the vert to come out. I put money down on my car soon after the concept pics were released , I think I heard love birds singing when I seen it for the first time.

If Chevrolet wants to be fully competitive with the GT500, a ZL1 convertible needs to be produced.

Well if there were to be a Vert ZL1 it most likely wouldn't be out until the '13 model year or maybe the '14 before the 6th gen. Hell, they may wait until the 6th gen for a ZL1 or equivalent model Vert. So, maybe the SS vert for now until the ZL1 vert is announced and taking orders and I'll trade it in at that point.
As far as aftermarket work, I rarely do crazy things to my car while it is under warranty plus I have learned over the years that yeah you can make your car as fast as anything but when you go to trade it in and you rarely keep a car more than 3 years, all the money you dumped in is worth nothing. I am going to sleep on it for a day or two and than I'll announce where I am taking my talents! Who knows maybe I'll follow Lebron to Miami where they have perfect convertible weather! Keep posting your thoughts though!
