Camaro Update: A Few Little Things...

This is a new post on the Motor Trend forum so it is not confirmed.

But it sure does sound right and good overall!

So today I caught up to my old buddy McGurk over at the Camaro Pilot project, and he brought me up to speed (ahem) on how the Camaro is progressing. I won't delve into hard numbers, because I do not want to get fired. However, he was able to tell me a few interesting snippets of info. As it stands right now:

-there will be three engines: a V6, a sensible V8, and a demented V8.

-prices will likely start out right around loaded Cobalt SS territory.

-the base V6 will give the current Mustang GT a run for it's money. A lower-output V6 was considered but deemed unnecessary. No mention was made of a four-banger, turbo or otherwise.

-the sensible V8 will probably produce numbers similar to the G8 GXP. Figure on a lighter curb weight and meatier tires, and you're looking at 0-60 in the low fours, I'd guess.

-the demented V8 will almost certainly exceed all other competitors with factory warranties, including Shelby 500KRs. I will once again go on record as saying that if Chevy decides to gear it the right way, it will give the Nissan GT-R fits. Sadly, it will have a sticker as high as it's power output.

-pilot convertibles are just beginning to be produced as we speak, which seems a little sooner than expected to my ears. Just in time for next summer perhaps?...

Are you saying that the Super Charged Camaro will be close to 50K?

I can deal with low 40s but, the sticker as high as it's output? That's what I'm guessing.

I'd say 50K is still a bargan. A ZR1 powered car for half the price of the actual ZR1. Sounds pretty good to me. Its also priced around the supercharged GT500.

Pontiac G8 GXP (403hp) goes 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds. Mid-level Camaro will be lighter and quicker.

Now, add in another 100 plus horsepower with a supercharger...

Place your bets

I will stake my career, even my life on the fact that it will never ever give the Nissan GT-R fits.

You all give that car too much credit...

Anyways...interesting info: Certainly not gospel. The starting price for the V6 he listed sounds a tad steep, though: IF true - that worries me. The Mustang 6 starts out at $20,000. Now, for $23 grand you'd get ~300hp, a very stable, quick car with lots of amenities I'm sure. That'd be one helluva bargain!!! But for a base Camaro (however much better), $3000 is a big difference in the eyes of consumers.
UNLESS: The Turbo 4 takes the lower price of ~20,000: Then we're talkin'!!

I digress. True or not, It's very hard for me to believe much of that.

Looks like I will be going with the"sensible" V8. It will prolly still kick the Mustang GT's ass, anyway.

The loaded Cobalt SS comment really worried me. 23,000 Seems kind of high, but then you also notice he said LOADED SS...but the too much credit thing..ugh, I don't want to sway the topic of this thread but, how many cars STOCK offer 0-60 in 3.3 or less and times that embarass cars that cost a lot more. Many people will complain about its top end, but road racing is what this car was built for.

I dont know how much of this is true. But it would be really cool to have a base v6 camaro that can keep up, or even beat a GT mustang.

All the things that are said there i was hoping for except the base price. The loaded cobalt SS doesnt really mean anything to me. I just see it as low 20K.

Same as the Challenger, base v6

But, I don't think thats what GM was originally aiming for...no offense to you, but I really don't think Dodge is a threat in this upcoming war. Their goal is the Mustang...
