ZL1 tire pressure sensors @ the track

thinking about a track day or two next summer. have extra wheels/tires. when I switch wheels at the track do I have to "reset" tire pressure sensors some how or does the car do it automatically? or will I get an error? also where is the best place to buy the sensors? GM or aftermarket?

If you switch wheels, yes you will need to reset the sensors if you want to be able to monitor your tire pressures.
If you don't you will end up getting a 'service tpms' on the DIC.

If you are switching the wheels just to race and you'll be putting the originals back on after racing. do nothing. You'll just see the message during racing.

On the ZL1's you need a special 'tool' to reset the sensors. Either the dealer can do it for you usually for free and takes only 2min, or there you can buy the tool yourself. It sells for around $50-60 I believe.

All the 'tool' is, is an electronic transmitter that you hold next to each wheel while going through the reset procedure on your radio.

I bought mine right from my Chevy dealer. It's the same one they use.
Sorry, I don't have a link or a model number, it's out in the garage and I'm too darn lazy to go out and get it yet tonight.

I do not use the sensor in my track tires. It adds some weight in the sensor and then to balance the tire. With no sensors the tire pressure warning comes on and once you get it out of the main display screen you can ignore it. The worse for me is if the street tires are in the pit area it starts to read their pressure every time I come off the track and then every time I go back on the track it gives me a new tire pressure warning.

That trick doesn't work anymore. GM removed that capability due to interference from other TPMS sensors. Believe it's the 12 and up models on all GM lines.

Nice! Learn something new every day.

Never needed to (or could, for that matter) rotate the tires on the ZL1, so I never had to do this...

I'm still scratching my head about this. I check tire pressure when I mount track tires. I check tires between sessions. While driving on the track as fast as I can make the car go I really don't think, "Hmm, I wonder what my tire pressure is reading right now" Seems like a waste of money and more dead weight, maybe only a couple of pounds but you don't need any more rotating wheel mass at the track.... just my 2 cents.

True, probably. It's handy during a track day...to have real-time feed on tire pressure, as it relates directly to tire temperature...

It's one of the ways how, besides feel, I know when the ZL1/1LE will be able to hold still around a bend. The tires need heat...and the display presents that as pressure.
