Why no staple shifter?

IMO, one thing that differentiated GM from the rest back in the 60's were little design 'quirks' like this, or the hidden fuel filler on a 57 Bel Air, or the cylindircal speedometer on a 70 Olds Toronado (needle was fixed, but speedo scale was printed on a barrel that rotated about a horizontal axis), or the column shifter on an old Riviera....

So why no staple shifter on the SS A6? Anyone know of any aftermarket attempts at this? If not, I might have to make my own!

Well because of costs. The buttons go to a relay and then to the electronic servo in the tranny. It would just be too expensive to do it that way.

The Hurst aftermarket and maybe a wood stick from the CTS Caddy lol might be only options.

Well it might be able to be done but the console is not that wide.

Now I know what he means, it's like what the Million Mile Camaro has. (A 70 SS with over million on it).

Shifter like this.....

A switch is a switch is a switch...regardless of whether or not the button is depressed from the side or from pulling up. I agree that the decision to exclude this was a cost-driven decision, but for crissakes - this is supposed to be GM's hail mary pass to get the company on the road to recovery. I would have gladly paid another 50-100 to have a retro shifter that paid hommage to its big brother!

The Hummer shifter is close, but it's missing a leg and the button is still depressed from the side.

If no one offers one, I just might take this on as a project, but to do it right would basically require a new molded center console cover to allow for the two vertical legs of the staple shifter to travel back and forth. Might as well make it a ratchet shifter too....hmmm more tricky since its got Tapshift. Put a couple of microswitches in the shifter housing, re-route the switch leads from the steering column.....could be a good winter time project.

Well leave some things to the aftermarket. Write letter to Hurst and ask for it.

it sure seems like the ratio could be better... just sayin....

yea well the hummers had all kind of issues with them still do in fact, mostly due to the interlock systems we use in cars today, hummer did not fare well and at roughly 600 for replacement be happy gm kept it simple

Like some of you, it's my opinion that little things like that are what separate automobile manufacturers from car makers. When I worked at GM, there was a movie we were always forced to watch that basically asked us how we could bring the company to a point where, like Harley Davidson, had fans and customers that believed in the company so much to the point that they would get GM or Cheveolet tattooed on their bodies.

If anyone is listening....if you build an aftermarket shifter like this, I will buy it!!

I wish the stock Camaro auto shifter had a leather boot around it, like the manual, instead of plastic trim. My GTO automatic has a leather boot. LOL, reading what I just typed sounds funny, but I mean it.

I know what you mean. It's nice to have cool little design things. My Chevelle has the "staple" shifter, it has a barrel tach., and the gas cap is behind the license plate. I love things like that
