Fire Extinguisher Mount Location
The SSCC.US events require a 2.5lb extinguisher "within easy reach of the driver and secured to the car". Any suggestions as to where this can go with as little damage to the car as possible would be appreciated. Photos would help. I am thinking substantial sheet metal screws into the drive shaft hump between the front and back seats. Are there any cables or wires in that area? Other suggestions? Thanks.

I have one from speed tactics that mounts to the seat frame rail. Just google speed tactics Camaro fire extinguisher and you'll find it.

I have a 4-point cage, and have mine mounted on the driver side with hose clamps.

I made a mount from 2" angle aluminum that bolts to existing holes in the driver side seat runners that mount in the floor. Cut a large portion of the vertical portion of the angle aluminum away, see pictures. Does not interfere with seat travel for and aft nor up or down. Though my car is an SS and not a ZL1, I'd bet the seat runners are the same so my mount would work.

The seat rail solution is perfect! Comes in and out easily enough. Thanks!!! Wonder if I could make one to include a sub belt mount for a 5 point harness...

I have enough aluminum to make another mount. I got the fire extinguisher from O'Reilly Auto Parts, P/N 466141, see:
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...e+extinguisher It's rated for Class B (liquids & gases) and Class C fires (energized electrical equipment). Ed M.

Mounted mine in the back seat, on the armrest, which may not count as "easily accessible" for the driver. And... I invested an hour of labor and a couple of bucks for a yella rattle-can, and customized mine. Not sure, though, if race officials would approve of anything other than 'fire extinguisher red' for a fire extinguisher. Moot point for me, as mine won't see a track.
I actually really like the previously- posted location just in front of the driver's seat, on the floor... might even move mine to that location. |

Buy any extinguisher, ya get the mounting bracket for free... it's quick release, because it's only lightly 'latched,' so it pops open very easily.

Thanks all above :-)
I'm going to try the under seat method (mainly thinking of it not being too visible to thieves). Spotted this Quick-Release Cable-Tie whilst searching about, may be useful for this or other projects FYI: http://www.hellermanntyton.co.uk/sit...50hr/115-00030 Last edited by redleader; 08-31-2013 at 10:58 AM. |
