New garage lighting

Me and my wife are closing on our very first house on Friday and I would like to get the garage lighting better then it has to help with seeing defects in the cars. Its a 3 car garage with 2 incad bulbs.

What type of light setup should I use to be able to see swirl marks in the paint while correcting it?

These are pictures of the garage before openers were installed and the floors cleaned up.

I am getting 3 8 foot T8 florescent fixtures using 5k bulbs with the option of going to 6500k bulbs.

Mine gets put in this sunday ill take pics and put them up on our FB page.

I put track lights in my garage. Put them on the wall, can slide them sides ways or up & down all depends how you mount them on the wall. Plus you can move the bulbs in any direction you want to point it too on the car.

Four or eight foot flourescents all over the ceiling.

IMO i wouldnt put lights that allow you to see swirls in your garage... i know if it was me, I would go absolutely bananas if i saw swirls everytime i looked at my car in the garage lol


i would just get a portable flourescent fixture or two to use while detailing

I have multiple 8 ft (2) and 4 ft (4) in my 3 car garage. I use 6500k lights. At night my garage is lit up like it is noon.

At work we use several things for inspection and grading of different species of wood, like Cherry Mahogany, Maple, Etc.
For high intensity inspection, we have racks set up with 4 50 watt halogen headlights.
for general inspection several 8 foot fluorescent fixtures will serve your purpose.
BUT for the most natural light you need to mix the bulbs, I think we have 3500K and 5200K bulbs in each fixture. (I would have to double check the numbers Monday at work)
They look kind of weird when you look at them, but it is the most natural looking (Cheap) light you can get.

Yup ... Mixing the bulbs is win. Also do more than u think. I did 3 8' sections in a 15x25' shop...honestly another would have been even better for paint work.

Awesome, thanks for all the info. I thought people were using LED's. Will be a while though, I didn't realize how expensive a fence was going to be. Would 9 48 inch lights spread out in different areas be good?

I would replace the incandescent light bulbs with some 8 ft T8 fluorescent, then for looking at swirls marks when you are detailing, I would look at a freestanding detail light.
