2010 Camaro KITT scanner lights for SS mail slot

UPDATED POST # 196!!!!!!!! 10/22/09

Update 9/23/09: UPDATEd post #189

UPDATED POST # 196!!!!!!!!

UPDATE 8/21/09::: The lighting and circuit board are done. The only thing left is for Dan to get my mail slot insert to make the housing fit snug into the mail slot opening. This is awsome news and it should be ready for purchase/production very soon. Keep in mind the shipping back and forth to him for me will be overseas but turn around time is like 14 days. No if you are looking to get this, you will not have to send him your mail slot, he will be using my mail slot to make duplicate molds. He just wants a mail slot so that he can get the insert holds just right ( so there is no cutting or modding needed, from what i can see on the design sketches and in talking with Dan ). But again i will post pics and install info as soon as i get it. I know it has been awhile but like he described before this is a very complicated piece that he built to last and amaze, so be ready!!!! http://www.knightlight.co.uk/pr-camaro-2010.asp
UPDATE 7/21/09::: As on the last page
Dan is out of his country but is still working on the light, when he gets back he is sending me the prototype / sketches. The idea is to have the light fit between the grooves of the mail slot, so you could do Blue in the upper groove and Red in the lower groove or just use one groove (yes i know the colors are illegal, just using as an example) both going the same way or both going in different directions, another idea is to replace the plastic piece with a polycarbonite clear/tinted piece that will look like the stock plastic but not visable during the day, also we want as all of you do to have little to no body modding. Stay tuned.......

UPDATE::: I just emailed the guy that made it and we both are going to work on a custom non-intrusive scanner. I have to send him pictures/ dimensions and i am going to make a cast so he can have great accuracy for this mod. So stay tuned i will post updates as i get them and yes i will get a blue one and orange one!

UPDATE:::: 10AM GUYs here is the power of the Camaro5-- My email to him

The forum that houses this beauty is here: the website is www.camaro5.com and yes it is on the FRONT page! You tube recorded 2k viewings since my upload at 10 pm last night! AWSOME i tell you.

link: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28236

His email back yo me:

That is awesome, we have noticed an increase of hits on our website too all from the link in your forum. 94 people have clicked on that link in the forum, and so far today we have has 224 visitors which is usually 100ish. Our stats are free for anyone to view, http://awstats.knightlight.co.uk

This is brilliant getting our name out there again. We started around 8 years ago making lights for the 3rd Gen firebird. Last year we stopped making lights for a whole year, back in april this year we have started again due to popular demand.
2000k viewings on youtube is superb. Thats great to hear.

Keep up the good work.

He then emailed this to me after i responded to above:

Hi again,
I had a thought, if I can get hold of decent grade bright orange LED's, I can fit 32 Blue and 32 orange alternately. All new lights come with 3 patterns built in. By pressing the next pattern button it moves onto the next pattern. if I edit the patterns you could choose we could have this:-

1. Standard Knight rider scanning light pattern (original KITT) in Blue
2. Standard Knight rider scanning light pattern (original KITT) in Orange
3. Standard Knight rider scanning light pattern (original KITT) fading from Orange to Blue over around 30 seconds and back to Orange again, 16 shades of each colour generating 256 colors between in Orange and Blue.
4. Two dots at each end meeting in the middle and back out again (KARR) in Blue
5. Two dots at each end meeting in the middle and back out again (KARR) in Orange
6. Two dots at each end meeting in the middle and back out again (KARR) fading from Orange to Blue over around 30 seconds and back to Orange again, 16 shades of each colour generating 256 colors between in Orange and Blue.
7. Knight rider 2008 pattern in Blue
8. Knight rider 2008 pattern in Orangee
9. Knight rider 2008 pattern in fading from Orange to Blue over around 30 seconds and back to Orange again, 16 shades of each colour generating 256 colors between in Orange and Blue.

On power off the last pattern is rememberd so on next power up it will have your desired pattern running.

We have made 2 lights ever using two colors of LED's. This would be quite unique. However for us to keep every color in stock would create some overheads, the only way we could do it, is to say to the customer is they want 2 colors of LED's fitted they would need to wait atleast 2 weeks for build.

This does create a nice effect, even though if you are running one colour at a time there is 32 LED's effectivly doing the scanning pattern, the polycarbonate lens blens one LED to the next even though the centers of the LED's are 14mm apart. Of couse if you are running both colours at once all 64 LED's will be used.

As you can see were are on our way lol

UPDATE::: Some more interesting INFO!
(Another email)
I am glad you have sparked this off. Glad your light still works.
You will be surprised how many components are there to run 64 LED's. Each LED has a resistor, transistor and another resistor. So including the LED thats 4 components x 64. 256 components, plus the shift registers and the microprocessor. Around 280 components in all. The light is so under stressed, thats why it lasts a long time. The LED's are always driven within spec, not over driven to get increased brightness. Nothing gets hot, and you can run these lights in a bucket of water. Next time I have a bucket handy i will prove it with a video on you tube.

Sorry for the sucky camera job....

I even give you a little bit of nostalgia

What you guys think? Be kind it is a rough sketch ....lol

Do you have a link as to where you can buy that scanner?

I hope you don't plan on using them while on the road. The strobeing blue light (and red too) will get you an expansive ticket real fast.

both blue and red are illegal. However you can use white, purple, green, orange...etc.. without any problems.. Purple LED's are hard to come by though since they do not exist.. The only way to get the purple is to have a blue led with a red/pink film/paper over it making purple..

So the 64 one might require altering mail slot? How wide is the mail slot, do you think shorter should be ordered and centered to be safe?
