Stevenson Camaro Z28 Picks Up 1st Win at Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Sebring

http://www.autoweek.com/article/2014...SCAR/140319867

A grinding crash that sent Mazda MX-5 driver Marc Miller into the wall caused the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race at Sebring International Raceway to end under caution on Friday after two and a half hours, awarding the anticlimactic victory in the GS class to the Stevenson Chevrolet Camaro Z28 of Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis. Second was Trent Hindman and John Edwards in a BMW M3, and rounding out the podium was Zacharias and Jaeger in a Nissan 350Z.

Miller, was treated and released from the hospital about 8 p.m.

In the ST class, veteran Randy Pobst and Andrew Carbonell took a decisive victory in a Mazda MX-5, followed by another Mazda of Chad McCumbee and Steve McAleer, just ahead of the BMW 328i of Eric Foss and Jeff Mosing.

The race was typically physical, with 59 cars on the entry list. By far the worst crash was Miller's -- contact with another car appeared to send his Mazda hard into the tire wall that surrounded the support for one of the pedestrian bridges over the track, essentially shearing the nose off the MX-5. Early reports said that Miller was “awake and alert,” and en route to a local hospital for observation, reportedly for back issues. Teammate McAleer said Miller was probably going 115 mph at the impact.

Liddell and Davis said they were especially pleased to get the new Z28 its first win. Liddell is considered a factory Chevrolet driver, and worked on the car's development. “This is especially satisfying,” he said.

For Pobst, it was like coming home to race the Mazda for Freedom Autosports. “I raced with the dads of all the team members now, including Andrew's dad,” Pobst said, laughing. In fact, Carbonell, 24, gave Pobst some pointers on braking -- “I was overdriving the car,” Pobst said.

This was the second race in the Continental Tire Challenge season. The first race, a prelude to the Rolex 24 at Daytona, was won by the BMW of Bill Auberlen and Paul Dalla Lama, but two hours after the checkered flag, they were disqualified for an unapproved intake, and the won went to another BMW M3 the Fall Line entry driven by Shelby Blackstock -- who is racing well enough to soon be known as a racer, and not singer Reba McIntyre's son -- and Ashley Freiberg. Foss and Mosing won in ST at Daytona.

In GS, Hindman and Edwards take a points lead to the next race, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in May. In ST, Foss and Mosing retain the lead that they first had after the season opener at Daytona.

Speed no longer exists. It has changed to Fox Sports One and I think if they show these races at all they show them on tape delay days after the race.

Here are a couple of more pictures of the winning Z28-R and the drivers. They came from an article that can be found here: http://checkupracing.com/

Here are the captions for each photo:

FS1 and FS2, i dont get near as many racing events than when I had Speed. Comcast doesnt show FS2 here.

The Z/28.R looks sexy as hell. I need to make it a point to get to one of these races this year.

I think all the GS cars run the same size tires and wheels, regardless of what make/model the car is. The wheels look small because the Camaro is the largest car in the GS class.

Most cars run the 275/35-18 in GS. The exception is the 370Z and 911, they run a 245 front 275 rear combo.

Ok, I checked the shitty fox sports 1 channel all weekend and only found the 12 hours of Sebring. Do they air the CTSC on tv anymore?

I watched the whole web stream of the Continental race on Friday. They said that there will be a shorter version of the race broadcast on one of the Fox Sports channels on Wed. the 19th. I don't see anything listed on the Fox Sports website so take it with a grain of salt.
This is the official YouTube channel for the CTSCC. They have a Sebring highlight video up already. http://www.youtube.com/user/IMSAvids

The IMSA.com website has a lot of decent info on it for both the Tudor and Continental series. They have the full CTSCC race at Daytona and will probably have the rest of the races uploaded a few days/weeks after the event. http://www.imsa.com/imsa-tv/episode/...-200-broadcast

FYI, the Z/28 GS has been detuned to 470HP. It has Hydraulic PS, Steel rotors, Penske dampers & 18" wheels. It weighs in at 3,300 lbs. Most changes were due to the Continental Tire SC Challenge rules.

The latest edition Racer Magazine is a Special Chevy edition.

That Z/28 looks great on the track in those pictures. I'm bummed though, I missed the Continental Tire Sebring race. Anyone know a place to watch it, or if IMSA will be adding it to their online race archives section of their website?.

And I agree that Fox Sports is crappy. They only showed 3 hours of the 12 hours at Sebring, and didn't show the Continental Tire race at all. They should have a separate channel for motorsports and auto racing, instead of trying to cater to all different type of sports fans with two lousy channels. Fox Sports Speed channel. That would be awesome! Otherwise, it seems like this when trying to watch these races, at least for me. For instance, here's what happened after I watched the first 3 hours of the 12 hours of Sebring race on FS1:

Ok, so after 3 hours I have to switch to online streaming. Ok where do I go? IMSA.com? Ok... website looks good! But where do I go to watch the rest of this race?! Ummm, oh wait, is this the right place? No there's no video here... Why isn't it on this page?! Oh, I know, because that would actually make sense.. Alright then, I'll just keep clicking everywhere until the video box comes up.... Ahh, finally got it... a half hour later. Oh well, I guess that's better than nothing. Let me just grab a drink from the fridge and..... Oh great, my internet just went out!! Son of a...!!! Why Fox Sports?! Why?!!

Anyway, congratulations to Stevenson Motorsports and their team. That Z/28 looks awesome on the track and I hope they continue to have success in the remaining races of the series.

Actually it may be less than that. And it weighs more. The GS.R was 3300, but the Z/28R is 3400 and gets a 3.73 gear instead of the 3.45 gear in the GS.R.

With the restrictions on the LS3 in the GS.R being zero mods and stock air box, combined with the number of restrictions imposed on teams making far less than the Z/28's 505HP, I am doubtful of the 470 HP claim.

Sadly, the IMSA specs published for '14 do not list anything other than the car being conditionally approved and issued a waiver of the rule requiring 500 units built and available by the first race, weight, gear, engine restrictor (75mm), and max RPM (6300).

The list of lighter than stock components allowed in the GS.R would give you some idea how much the Z/28R may differ from the actual street car.

Car specific regs here: http://www.imsa.com/sites/default/fi...20%2314-58.pdf

Congrats on winning a race. I'll keep my opinions on racing a 7.0l engine against 3.8, 4.4, and 5.0s to myself.

I got the information from Racer Magazine in a Chevy Special review. They mentioned that due to the size and weight of the Camaro being significantly more than the competition it was allowed the HP. As for the size of the engine isn't it configured as weight to HP. Just like the Vipers are allowed a detuned V10 in GT racing.
