Does Wheel Size Affect 0-60 Times? (V6/Auto)
I'm in the midst of cutting our V6/Auto Camaro video review. Loved the car, but I've been banging my head with this question for a while ...
Our test 2LT unit was equipped with the #2 21-inch wheel package. Couldn't hit the stated 0-60 times (6.1 sec) ...best stab at it was .5 off. Should I just hang up my keys (and take up stamp collecting), or does wheel size affect 0-60? This looks to be the same car that AutoBlog tested ... packed with $11K in options. |

smaller diameter tires, that will lower your gear ratio, will give you a tad more acceleration,
same diameter, but lighter tires/wheels will remove some rotating mass and improve your times.

Yes the wheel size does make a huge difference. You are dealing with much more rotational mass with the 21s. If you weigh them I bet they are 25 pound more than the stockers a piece. so you are adding like 100 pounds of rotational mass. I dynoed my LS6 with 20s then with factory aluminum 16s and got a astounding 60hp and 77 LB/FT of torque. Its like changing to light weight fltwheels, or drive shafts ect.. You gotta pay the price to look good. My 96 started life as a v6 and after 20s and a world class stereo were added it wouldnt get out of its own way, so I then put a ls1 in it, then converted to a ls6, then nitrous, then..... well you get the idea

Thanks! That's along the lines of what I've been thinking ...
If we had Mythbuster's budget (as opposed to a non-existent budget), we'd set up mileage and performance tests, using various wheel sizes, from 18s to 21s. I've got a couple of ideas and something to shoot for, if nothing else. |

The overall dia. is suposed to be the same for all wheel/tire combos offered from 18-21". The side wall is what varies. You may notice a small difference between sizes due to weight, but is you run an 18" wheel with a 50 sidewall tire you will definantly notice a difference.

I seriously doubt that the entire .5 seconds is due to the wheels. You're assuming that he'd get the advertized time on the run.

Tire dia.
Quote:
What size rims did it come with from the factory? The 2LT has 19" with the RS pkg. they are 20" ...What is the overall Dia.of your 21"tires ? What was the overall Dia. of Tires it came from the factory with ? IF there is much of a difference THAT could the reason. A smaller overall Dia.Pkg. would give you a quicker ET You would think a larger size rim with tire would have a larger overall Dia. than a smaller rim with tire. That is not always true. IT ALL DEPENDS on the TIRE size. Last edited by 97one; 09-23-2009 at 04:42 PM. |

97one - This car has the #2 dealer-installed OEM 21-inch option package. 21" x 8.5' rims, 245/40ZR21s.
I didn't order it that way, I'm only the test driver. Not sure about the tire diameter ...

MOTOR TREND gives the 0-60 mph ET as: 5.9 sec. for the manual and 6.0 sec. for the AUTO. That is the V6 with the RS 20" tires.............

I forgot to add : I would think the possible small Dia. difference between the 20" & 21" would only be app. .1 or .2 sec. in the 0-60ET times. I guess you used the SPORT mode or Paddle shifters to make the test ? Sorry but I had to ask...........
