What was Chevy's reason behind the L99 with automatic?

just curious if anyone knows why Chevy put the LS3 with the stick, but used the L99 with the automatic? Why not the same engine with both manual and auto?

I did a search on this forum but couldn't find an answer.

from my understanding, they used the L99 because it had active fuel management, which could shut down cylinders and reduce fuel consumption, which works well with an Automatic Trans. Now with the LT1 engine doing the same thing with the 7 Speed Mans in the Corvette, I'm sure we'll see the same thing in the 6th Gen Camaro (I would love a V8 with 450 HP and do 28 MPG).

GM decreed there would be no GG tax on the Camaro. My SS with the LS3 and an automatic carried a $1,700 tax.

This would have put the Camaro at a HUGE disadvantage against the Mustang.

It kept you from having to pay a gas guzzler tax on the L99

Edit: #3 just beat me to it.

i bet its because you would get a shutter with the stick cars when it went into 4cyl mode. The torque converter absorbs it on the autos. AFM is a scam. works on paper only. I dont know about the Camaros with afm but in the trucks you would get better mileage with it turned off.

Full 1LE suspension, with BMR adjustable sway bars and links, GM aluminum cradle bushings, Hurst shifter with lighter reverse spring, TWM shifter knob, Tick level 1 transmission. I should have bought a ZL1

It works the way it's supposed to. It avoids the GG tax.

Real world is another story. But just think about what you posted.

You are saying you get better mpg when all 8 injectors are pumping fuel than when only 4 of them do.

You are reporting, shall I say, non scientific anecdotal results. So I would agree sometimes under certain conditions you could do better. But if you drove the EPA cycle the way it's driven, nope.

Sorry, but no. The government reports otherwise.

Also not sure how you guys are reporting, "with it turned off". You can't turn it off on the Camaro or FST. On the C7 I believe you can deselect ECO mode.

I've got it in my Tahoe and 2 Camaros and the only way it gets better MPG turned off is with a tune. And most are tuning at the same time they turn it off.
