"tuning" J-pipes

Just wondering how many of you have adjusted your j-pipes (if you have them)? My car is fairly well modded, including headers, full exhaust (Solo), blower, cam, intake, etc. I recently went with catless midpipes and have been experiencing a bit of drone (at least I think that's what it is). It seems to happen in 6th gear when crusing around 30-40 mph. RPMs are usually around 1000-1400 (maybe a bit higher). If I give some light throttle to maintain speed, or speed up very slightly, that's when I get the drone

Last night, I adjusted the pipes to make the a little longer (only about 1/2 inch) and that actually seemed to help somewhat. I've read that lengthening the pipes moves the drone farther up the RPM range. Also, Solo said lengthening is usually the way to go in cases like this. I was hoping to get some experience from other drivers, especially if you're running without cats. Thanks

I had 36" custom J pipes installed for drone at around 1.2K RPMS. What little drone that was left did occur at a slightly higher RPM. My J pipes aren’t adjustable but the drone is no longer an issue for me. I have high flow cats.

Your car can be in 6th at 30 mph?

Pretty sure, maybe like 35-ish. The auto likes to get it into 6th as quickly as possible. Even tapshift mode, I was cruising along yesterday in the 30-ish mph range and I manually shifted into 6th just to verify.

I made the solo j's as long as possible to kill all drone I had in the 1400 rpm range.

Thanks, I was fooling with them tonight and that's where I have them for now. They could probably extend a bit more, but right now the tips of the j-pipes are about an inch from each other, so even if they came out more, they'd be touching.

Hmmmm, I'm very interested in this. My Outlaws drone right around 1900-2200 very heavily. As long as I keep it under that, it's not all that bad at all. Will LT's make it worse? Or possibly move it around in the rpm range?

It will probably get worse in my opinion. I have 2" LT, high flow cats, and 3" Outlaw. I usually grab a different gear when drone comes into play. J pipes are in my future. Lol

Yeah, j-pipes might be worth a shot. I hear you can just have them welded on. It's either that, or get a whole new exhaust.

I didn't notice any change in drone when I got my headers, but I never really had a big problem with it to begin with.

im not sure about the camaro but in the trucks and the c6 Vette you can shift to any gear you want and it goes into the gear it needs to be in up to that gear. if you shift to 4th the car will still go into 1-4th it will just not go into 5th. shift it to 6th it is just like having it in auto drive. I dont think your car can do 6th gear at 30mph. the way to check is put it in 6th at a stop. I bet it goes through the gears as needed.

They will. I bought them and had them welded onto my Borla catback setup.

Yes you can "tune" out any drone. I made my own J's and made them adjustable. The wife is very sensitive to noise and it took 4 or 5 adjustments to eliminste all drone. Car was dam near unbearable when we got it and now we can cruise for hours
