Very happy new 5 Gen owner / new member

Hi - I just bought a 2014 2SS Convertible 6-speed manual and I absolutely love it! I have been driving SUVs for the last 30 years and felt it was time to get back to my “fun car” roots. I suspect I’m a bit older than the average member here but am still a ways off from the median age of a Corvette buyer which is 62(!)

This car puts a smile on my face every day! It’s black with the orange stripe package and the options are dual mode exhaust, 20” polished aluminum wheels, nav and short throw shifter. It only has 5400 miles on it and is still covered by the factory 3 year warranty for another 6 months.

I have a couple of questions that I suspect have been dealt with extensively the past here and hope someone can address them or point me to good threads on them:

1. Convertible top and the tonneau cover. I’ve heard about early Gen 5 converts having issues with wear spots on the convertible top. Is this still a problem for the 2014 model? The tonneau cover was standard equipment with this car but I haven’t really been using it. Do I have to?
2. The window drop is too slow to get out of the way of the weather stripping when opening the door at a normal rate. I have to open the door very slowly to avoid catching it. I know they don’t all do this because with another 2014 convert I test drove, the window drop was so fast that it shook the door and maybe even the whole car a little bit. I thought there was something wrong with the door hinge until I figured out what was going on. I brought mine to the dealer thinking the battery was weak and they said my weather stripping was swollen and installed new weather stripping and re-indexed the windows. The new weather stripping is a little higher than the old so it catches less but it still catches. Still convinced the battery was weak, I bought and installed a new battery myself but that didn't help - same behavior. It is dropping far enough but not fast enough.

If someone could address these questions or point me to good threads on them I would really appreciate it!

Thanks,
-Scott

There are quite a few of we mature owners here.

Try this for your window question:

Welcome and congrats on the new ride! The tonneau cover is not required but I do think it looks a little nicer with it on and helps keep leave and stuff from falling inside the boot area. As far as the window drop I believe what you are experiencing is normal. If you try to open the door immediately mine will catch too. I pull the handle without opening the door and pause a second or two so the window goes down then open the door. This is just what I got used to doing so its not a issue!

Welcome aboard ! Congrats on a sweet ride. I've never thought about the window drop, never happened. Unless you are quick draw Mc Graw, I think you have an issue. I haven't heard of any side window issues since December when I showed up on the scene. But try the search, it will go all the way back to 2009 when 5th Gens started in the early Fall.

As far as the boot goes, it's mixed consensus. It's a must for highway top down driving. Most will use it for car shows, cruise ins. And some will still use it more if they garage vert with top down (less on & off). Enjoy your new ride!!

Welcome and congrats. I am under the median age of Corvette owners (61) and have owned 3 of them already. I bought my first one (69 L46 4 Speed Roadster) when I was 52. Now I have a 13 Grand Sport 6 Speed convertible. The 15 2SS RS convertible is the wife's car. We have had 6 other Camaro's. We still have the 69 SS. Enjoy your new toy!!!! There are more geezers on here than you think.

How in the world did you find a 2010 'vert?
The first 5th gen convertibles were introduced in the mid-year 2011 run. June,2011 IIRC, when they hit the showrooms.

Very nice..! I owned some cool cars in my early to mid 20's but got my first SUV in 1986 (Ford Bronco II) and it has been all SUV's since until now. I forgot how much fun it can be to just drive(!) I used to sort of flip cars back then and owned a 67, 70, and 75 Camaros and a 71 Firebird and a handful of Mustangs including few converts and a 65 2+2. I used to buy them with problems like body rot and drive 'em, fix 'em, paint 'em and sell 'em. My magnum opus, however, was a 65 Corvette convert which I sold in 1984 to pay for my last year in college. That car paid for one year at Northeastern University which today would be $60K or so. That is probably what the Vette is worth too if it is still around...

Cheers,
-Scott
