Up or down?
Up- depends on if I'm flooring it or crusing. If I'm crusing, then I listen to the engine. She will tell you. When downshifting- usually around 3-4k rpm.

Agreed, it is faster and more capable on its own. I only manually shift to hear the engine and exhaust during slow acceleration or deceleration.

I paddle shift ALL the time except for highway cruising or, like you stated, when wanting the optimum performance. I've always been a manuals guy, but left knee/right shoulder joint replacements resulted in weaker muscles, so I opted for the A8. And I will say now paddle shifting is as much fun if not more than manual shifting - at least for me.

I haven't manually shifted enough to build the shift delay into my behavior for the activity to be fun. But, just in case anyone didn't already know, it will downshift for you when the rpms get too low. you only need to manually down-shift if you're looking to pass someone or lucky enough to get some racing-style driving in.
When i do use manual shifting, i tend to use the stick vs the paddles. The wheel needs to be turned too far to make 90 degree turns so it becomes annoying as hell to paddle shift while driving around normal roads, as I'll almost always need to shift in the middle of the turn. As for which rpm i do it at, it varies, but not much different from the where the tcm will shift. Which is why i dont use it that much. Not a whole lot of opportunity to have much fun in heavy traffic every day. |

Depends on the driving style I'm shooting for. I can match the exact points of the TCM if I feel like it. Or if I'm going a little more spirited then I'll shift at 2500-4000 depending on the throttle. I only really use manual mode when I'm going balls to the wall or to purposely decel from a higher RPM to hear the pops.

I LOVE THE MANUAL OPTIONSS......., BUT WHEN THAT DAMN PERFORMANCE MODE KICKS IN.......................THERE IS NOTHING IN THIS ENTIRE CONTINENT LIKE IT. THE DOWNSHIFT IS ALMOST FRIGHTENING.

Yes, the 3-4 and 4-5 shifts during heavy acceleration are blisteringly fast. I've never considered an auto Camaro until this A8 and once I drove it I was sold.

This might be a stupid question, but does the manual shifting act differently in each driving mode, i.e. tour/sport/track?
I've tried the manual shifting a couple times, but it felt weird to me. Like the shifts were too slow or something. Haven't tried manual shifting at WOT, though. |

Paddle-shifting isn't for (straight-line) performance. It's to give people that are bored something to fidget with. There's zero chance you are accomplishing anything useful by taking control from the TCU, unless you are on an actual road course where predicting the gear you will need to be in for a curve matters.

60% of the time i drive the car i have it in manual mode. I can't get enough of the crackle popping noises and just love the way it sounds. If i didn't live in traffic area hell NYC i would most likely gotten a M6...
