Can someone please explain why a car needs a damn 8 SPEED?

People say that everytime a new trans comes out. The 5,6,7 and now 8.

If you look at it your way we would still be driving cars with 1960's technology.

The more gears a trans has, the narrower the power band on the engine needs to be. That is why semi's have 13 speeds, the engines have a low redline but high torque, more gears keeps them in the optimal range. That was the theory behind the CVT, let the engine speed stay the same, and change the gear ratio.

Whatever happened to CVTs? I know they're still in economy cars and I think Maximas? They were supposed to be the next big thing and replace the ever increasing gear count but they've sort of fallen off the radar?

They're no good for engines with any serious amount of torque. The belt they use slips like nobody's business.

I know where you're coming from. 2,3 and even 4 speed transmissions don't have a good enough range. 5 or 6? Probably optimal given the operating range of most gasoline engines (ie redline<10k). 7,8,9+? It would have to lock out certain gears durring normal operation otherwise it would probably be shifting all the time. There's enough complaints about 6 speed auto's hunting for gears, I hate to see what an 8 speed would do.

The more important question would be "Who in the world would want a Lexus?"

It probably seems like overkill and may even be Lexus merely thumbing their noses at the other OEMs, "Just cuz we can, baby. Just cuz we can"

However, as stated it allows for more flexibility in maintaining the engine in a more optimal operating RPM. You could, in theory, go for a better first gear for start and a longer 8th gear for highway cruising, but it generally doesn't work out that way. It is just a better spread between the 1st and 8th gear.

And if you drive one, you'll have to watch the tach. It's pretty smooth.
