The Lexus 8 speed automatic

Can someone please explain why a car needs a damn 8 SPEED?

more moving parts that can break in my book........

but maybe one of you experts can explain the advantages to 8 gears.

#1........Better MPG by far !

#2........Faster 0-60, 1/4 mi. or what ever range you want!

People say that everytime a new trans comes out. The 5,6,7 and now 8.

If you look at it your way we would still be driving cars with 1960's technology.

Quite a few cars have 8 speeds transmissions. Audi's,Merecedes,BMW's etc

GM had one in development a few years back...even had some patents and a trademark filed...

i never said that. i totally understand 6.......... but when you get up to 8 its almost like driving a delivery truck or something

The more gears a trans has, the narrower the power band on the engine needs to be. That is why semi's have 13 speeds, the engines have a low redline but high torque, more gears keeps them in the optimal range. That was the theory behind the CVT, let the engine speed stay the same, and change the gear ratio.
