Dissapointment

I just had and axle back Magnaflow exhaust installed on my SS. It was a real pain to install almost 3 hours and it still doesn't fit correctly. I will have to take it back to the shop for it to be taken off and adjusted and reinstalled. I will admitt the car looks a lot better getting rid of those HUGE mufflers. I had no idea they where that large. Now I am not bashing Magnaflow I have used their product over the years and have been totally satisfied with their product. My biggest disapointment is the sound. I wanted a little more rumble. It is honestly quieter than the stock exhaust. Now it is brand new with less than 30 miles on it. Do you think it will get louder with a few mile on them and if not what would you do. I would hate to take off a $700.00 muffler set (including labor) and start over. The shop is not any more at fault about this system than I am. It was a mutual agreement on this set as he had never used or installed one on and SS. HELP

I would bash the folks that installed it before bashing Magnaflow. When you do the axle back exhausts, there are precise instructions on where to cut the old mufflers and pipes, and about properly adjusting the new muffle/pipes. Many people have had no issues with fitment, so IMO I would say the installer must not have done all they could to adjust it properly.

As far as sound, on F-bodies, Magnaflow has always been very quiet. I had it on my 95 Z28 and ended up installing a cut out because it was so quiet. I'm not sure what other vehicles you have had Magnaflow on, but for an aggressive tone I would go with something a bit louder (ie: SLP LMII, or Borla). not only that but there are many sound bites to give you an idea of what to expect. Also, I had the magnaflow on my 95 for a couple years and no it did not become louder or more aggressive. good luck.

$700 ouch!

Dude....I just got a quote from MagnaFlowPlus to get the Magnaflow 3" cat-back (#16483) delivered to my door for $880. As good of a price as that is I'm probably not going to do it at the moment because the Street Series systems are known to be quiet w/o headers. I'm just going to do something cheap until I can save up enough money to do a complete system and tune.

I would look at changing out to another axle-back (I personally like SLP LMII) or adding headers and high flow cats (much more expensive option).

Actually....what I would recommend is that you look into doing just a muffler delete and for a little more performance replace the H-pipe with an X-pipe. Look around locally and you can find a muffler delete job pretty cheap. I posted in the regional section for local muffler shop recommendations and found someone that will do a muffler delete for $80...found a second shop that would do it for $96. Pick up a Magnaflow #14379 for about $92 spend probably $60 to have that added and you can effectivly have the Magnaflow Comp Series cat-back for about $250-$275.

Airboater, you need to find another muffler place. My local muffler shop charged me $500 including tax and install for x-pipe, 2.5" tubes and Magnaflows. Not only that, they took their time to make sure everything fit perfectly using tape-measures (and i don't mean mexican tape measures). it took a few hours, but everything fit like it should. i've had my set-up for about 2K miles and it hasn't gotten louder, but I love my sound!

Seriously, go elsewhere or stand there while they do it and tell them how it should look. Good luck!

That is why I am going SLP loudmouth IIs. No ifs ands or buts that it wont be loud enough. And when they are installed, before I accept the vehicle I will make sure the tips are alligned right coming out the back.

If you want loud, and you want magnaflow, go with the competition series. Some people say it's "Too loud" for their taste.

And three hours to install a axle back? What kind of shop did you take it too? lol. I suggest finding someone in town who specializes in that kind of stuff.

I paid $525, for X pipe and Magnaflow mufflers. The guy who installed it asked me two questions before he ordered the mufflers, one on a scale of 1 - 10 how does it sound stock and where on that scale did I want it to sound. Came out perfect just the right sound without being obnoxious.

No kidding. There are DIY threads on here with guys installing LM's in 45 minutes on jackstands.

Magna-slow mufflers use a type of mineral wool packing around a perforated pipe (glass pack style). With time they will get a little louder as this mineral wool breaks down. However, I personally don't like the Magna-slow sound.

I much prefer a chambered style muffler such as Flowmaster, MAC or Cherry Bomb (chambered, not the glass packs).

It's all about an individual's taste and personal preferences. I went through 6 systems on my 2006 Mustang GT. I managed to sell the 5 other exhaust systems I didn't like on Craigslist for almost what I paid for them. But...these were $300 slip-on axle back systems. They weren't $700.

I can tell that you don't like Magnaflow.
Slowmaster is a pretty good company too but i think all their series sound too...pansy? I don't know a word for it. They just don't sound as deep or "bad ass" as other systems out there do, makes the car sound almost hollow. At least from what i heard on a few cars so far. But hey like you said, it's all about an individual's taste.

Give it a little time to break in. Haven't used Magneflow yet, but with my last two cat-back systems, they both had a more conservative sound for the first week or so. After that they opened up a little

There quiet, you picked the wrong muffs for "loudness". There going to get a little louder as the factory muffs did but not alot to change your mind. and the shop like u said, you Cant blame them at all.
I say Sell them and do a muff delete. that way you dont lose out on too much.

I put the 16483 on with a lift in 1 hour. The next one that I do will only take me about 40 mins. O, by the way this is a cat back comp series with the X pipe. The sound at first wasn't very much different than stock but boy it sure is now!!! I love the sound after about 150 miles on the system. It really came alive!!!!
