OEM ZL1 Tires + Wet = ?

GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 SUPERCAR 3

How bad are they in the rain? About 2 weeks ago I got caught in a thunderstorm coming home (only time the car has seen rain!) and they seemed fine to 60mph. Obviously I was not goosing keeping the RPMs low...

Opinions?

The OEM tires will try to kill you in rain.

They are like driving on almost bald summer tires in the rain. They don’t have enough tread depth to be a safe tire in inclement weather. I replaced the OEM tires within 2 months of buying the car with Michelins pilot sport 4s. They don’t handle near as well, but I’m not worried about driving in cold or wet weather.

Not as bad as the Michelin Sport Cup tires that were on my Z06 Z07. No good in the rain or just cold.

Depending on the temperature. At 60 and up is seems to be fine. Below - just stay home LoL.

I experience the same as you did Fran. I just keep my speed under a certain speed and modulate the throttle. I’m on my second set of the Goodyears but don’t think I will replace them with any other tires. When I bought my ZL1 back in 2019 used I had the original tires replaced with the OEM Goodyears back in 2020. Mine is not really a daily driver but won’t hesitate to drive in wet conditions. I’m just careful when driving in rain or wet weather.

As mentioned, they are not meant to be driven in the rain. Light rain, sure but even then you'll still lose traction a lot.

Anything above that and you'll be taking a very high risk in having an accident.

I was caught in a very heavy downpour for about 2 minutes on the Interstate (coincidently after picking up my Pirelli P Zero tires) and I had to drop to about 30 to keep from sliding around.

It's your choice but know that you shouldn't drive them in wet weather nor when the outside temp is under 60.

Are you the Lord Jesus? It sounds like you can walk on water! Mine tried to kill me at less than 50 on the highway!!!!
Ooops, never mind. I thought you were talking 3R's at first.

Mine are good till you get about 30% of wear left, then make a turn of a hwy on a wet surface/just finished raining and you feel the back end kick out 3-4 inches, I start looking for tires. On dry 70 degree days still good, but one slick spot could cost you.

They certainly do better when they're new. The GY SC3 tires have less tread than most street tires so there's less water channeling. Given that these tires last about 10-12k miles, once you've put about 3-5K on them, the tread depth is even lower and they get even more dangerous in standing water and heavy rain. On damp roads and light rain they do fine though.

Wet, they're not dangerous for normal sensible street driving. But rain, heavy rain, ponding, puddling, standing water, > 45mph they hydroplane like crazy. Its kind of a fine line, I think.

Yeah, my freshly bought car drove over small slushy snow "fine"
