Plug or Patch Tire
Hi All , picked up a screw in Right Front Tire , I had plans to take the T an W to Discount tire for a patch , and most likely will . I decided to plug ,
I didn't want the T an W separated . The plugs were rust colored and kinda gooey feeling . Last time I plugged a tire was 33 years ago my ATV . So what's the consensus Plug or Patch .

Would rather have a patch but the last time I had one done at Discount Tire they called it a plug/patch combo saying that its patched on the inside with a plug that sticks out. I hate the way a plug looks sticking out of a tire.

I agree, patch 100% of the time when you can! Only if the patch can full stay flat on the inner tire and not wrapped around the corner/sidewall (on the inside). Plugs, are not so good.

I plugged a nail hole on my wife's car so I could limp it to Discount Tire. Big mistake. They would not patch it from the back since I had plugged it on my own. As a result, with her AWD Nissan Rogue, I had to buy 4 new tires, because the AWD system needs tires of the same diameter, otherwise the AWD system freaks out.
Next time, I'll take that sort of thing to a local shop for a patch. |

I've plugged many tires over the years. Zero failures. I carry a plug kit and a Viair inflator in my truck. Bias, radial, run flat, done them all

Definitely patch the tire. Goodyear won’t warranty the tire if you plug it.

long term plugs can allow moisture to creep in.

I had a screw in one my GYs and had it plugged and patched. Held up fine for 3 years until I replaced them with PS4S. Don't think I would trust just a plug for the way these cars are meant to be driven.

Most tires you can plug and be fine but not ultra summer Z rated tires, if you care to maintain the integrity of the tire and its capabilities. Always patch it. You're not being rational about the patch and dismounting the tire, and last time I had one done it was $16. The plug ain't gaining you anything at all here.
But I wholeheartedly agree that tires have been plugged since the tire was invented but there's a much better method especially for this type of tire. |

They're supposed to trim off that little tail flush to the tread and it otherwise should wear itself off.

Like others above, I have plugged tires for years and the only time I had one leak was when I double-plugged a tire while I waited to replace it. Turned a big hole into a tiny leak and got me through. If I was tracking the car and the plug was near the edge I might be concerned. That hole being in the center, I bet it never comes loose if plugged properly. |

A plug patch is the way to go. It’s a rubber patch and rubber plug combined together. They use a special glue that seals the area where the plug goes through the tread and the patch is a normal looking piece. This offers the best protection from water intrusion into the core of the tread.

I had a similar experience, simple fix, which lasted till tire
Wore out…. If it’s on front tire and screw is located where U pictured, don’t even have to remove wheel….just buy A tire repair kit (less the $10) follow simple instructions I put over 5000 miles never had a problem. |

Unless I'm reading the wear indicators wrong, that tire looks like it's close to replacement anyway.
