Problems with my Saturn!

I figured I would ask this question since gm did own saturn. I have a 1998 sacturn sc1 (manual w/150k+ miles). This problem has been happening for off and on for about 2yrs or so. On occasions, when i drive around and come to a stop (while my car is idling), my car idles at almost 2k rpms. I know this is not normal. I've asked around but it seems people can't give me sure answer why this is happening. Any ideas?
I also have problems putting it in 1st and 3rd gear. Meaning it won't go into those gears very easily sometimes.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I am not mechanically talented in any way, but my best guess is that the car is just old and needs a tune up. As for the manual trans being difficult to shift, that does happen with age I'm fairly sure. A new clutch should help I think

The throttle bodies in them carbon up really bad. I would get it taken off and cleaned thoroughly.

There is a stepper motor used for idle control. It is either on its way out or has become contaminated with carbon or oil etc. You may have also developed a vacuum leak from a broken vac line or failed gasket etc.

At those idle speeds it WILL be difficult to get into gear as 1st gear is not synchronized nor designed to engage at those engine/trans speeds. It could also be that the pilot bearing is trashed and dragging on the input shaft.

Only way you are gonna know for sure is to have a competent tech diagnose it....

Good point about the revs vs. synchro speeds. Def possibility.

My wife's 2000 with m/t had the same problem and it was the IAC motor. Replace it or try cleaning it. Make sure you clean the passage way also.

Thanks for the info. I should of also mention this.
Sometimes or most of the time when I have it in 1st and while the clutch is engaged at the same time, I give it some gas and let go while still in 1st and having the clutch still engaged, the car starts to choke (can't think of a better word for it). It sounds like the car is about to die on me. Is that also linked with the IAC motor as well?:(
What is a ball park figure to get that replaced if it needs to be?

Check MOTOR/TRANNY mounts. Could be broken and allowing "lift" pulling on accelerator cable. Sounds crazy but it happens.:(

Its easy to do yourself, you will need a #15 tox on a socket to take the IAC out. Make sure you clean the passage you tell by the end of the pintal how dirty it is. Clean it with some gum cutter. The part is somewhere around $25.00 from your local parts store.

I dont' want to go off subject but only this one time
You have good taste man. Her name is summer glau. Sarah conner chronicles was a great, great show, but unfortunate it didnt get the ratings it needed and so did firefly:(:(. It shows how bad people can't tell a good tv show these days. Plus she was in 4400 which was an ok show. Yea i'm a huge sci fi fan
