Wheel weights on my Camaro's calipers

Also as reported on Frontpage Blog

Anybody know what the deal is on the stack of wheel weights on both front calipers on the 2010 with brembo's? I will try to attach a picture.

UPDATE:

OFFICIAL ANSWER FROM JOHN FITZPATRICK:

Some early Camaro customers noticed that there are weights on the Camaro SS calipers. With high-performance vehicles like the Camaro SS, minor brake noise is not uncommon. The weights act as a damper to reduce noise in certain driving conditions. This was done after careful evaluation and validation by our engineering team. These weights will only be added to early builds of the Camaro SS.

haha.. looks like someone doesn't know the difference between the wheel and the caliper is al. HAHAHA

robby 04-19-2009 06:25 PM

Interesting way to increase unsprung weight.

Uh, other than a playful assembly line worker, I can't think of a thing.

??

Andro 04-19-2009 06:33 PM

What the???

camarorick 04-19-2009 06:35 PM

:iono: Weird, are these on your car ?

erasedgod 04-19-2009 06:39 PM

I swear I've seen something similar in the past, but I can't remember where.

ROMANO6.0 04-19-2009 06:40 PM

I always put em on the wheels...:character0182:

SNOOK 04-19-2009 07:09 PM

Yea, on both sides. I don't recall ever seeing anything like this. Lots of weights on the wheel as well. No problem to 100 mph, and braking very shortly after that.

camarorick 04-19-2009 07:20 PM

That's ridiculous !!... Those weights are not doing anything but looking ugly !

NVMY68SS 04-19-2009 07:23 PM

Hmmm............man, I'm glad they have my car somewhere else looking it over again so I don't end up with weights on my calipers.:sm0:

Captain Awesome 04-19-2009 07:23 PM

I bet it's the way they calibrate the handling of the car. It must have a perfect 50/50 weight distribution...

LOL!

stovt001 04-19-2009 07:32 PM

Sounds to me like they have a new guy on the line, and he doesn't know where wheel weights go. This is comforting.

rayhawk 04-19-2009 07:55 PM

Those are special edition tuned Brembos, which is a rare factory option. You are so lucky :bellyroll:

2010 SS RS 04-19-2009 08:09 PM

Good to see you guys are back on track and blowing things way out of proportion.

kylepo 04-19-2009 08:35 PM

WTF

LSX-80MM 04-19-2009 08:57 PM

yea what he said

kdoske 04-19-2009 09:12 PM

omg wtf, i honestly believe that some half english speaking person on the line was told to put weights on the wheels and misinterpreted...

I hope im wrong on this but damn thats weird, I just can't image why the hell else they would be there.

Edit: OR! maybe that's part of the assembly process and the weights are attached to the brembos and then sent down to the next station where they are removed and placed on the wheel for balancing but some how this car got missed............dude you got me this **** is wierd as ****...

cam2fst4u 04-19-2009 09:16 PM

they do it to reduce brake vibration. lol... sounds good. Ask the mole.. Go to the moles thread and ask... He may be able to give you an answer or ask Fbodfather.

Bornin69 04-19-2009 09:20 PM

No wonder the car weighs so much!

mlee 04-19-2009 09:33 PM

Everyone needs a set of those on their Brembos... Pick em up at your local tire shop....:D

Uhhhhh, yeah...... I guess that one slipped past the QA inspection.

I believe I would be making a phone call or two on that one and ask if they are supposed to be there or why they might have put them there. If nobody can come up with an answer, I would just remove them.

Maybe Number 3, Fbodfather, Davis, and Richard can check their front Brembo's.

I'm on the way to the dealer to let them use it for the week and I'll be sure to ask, not that they'll know but I'll ask anyway. Raining here all week so no big deal.

Matster 04-20-2009 07:05 AM

Done to add extra weight in order to give the Stang and Challenger a fighting chance:sm0:

just curious why you are lending it back to the dealer?

LMAO ....

Rock 04-20-2009 12:23 PM

Never seen this before, I wouldn't worry too much though, they just peel right off.
Only thing I can guess is that maybe they do a 4 corner balance? Weird regardless.

Hoss 04-20-2009 12:37 PM

One of the assemblers is signing his work. That is different!!

Davis 04-20-2009 01:10 PM

Umm guys..mine has them too.

are you serious? I thought a lineworker was just screwing around, or storing them there to put on another vehicle or something like that.

1_2Many 04-20-2009 01:18 PM

Those are brake balancers....you need more front bias on a car that's why the front rotors are bigger.

And FYI I'm totally kidding...lol.

SNOOK 04-20-2009 02:00 PM

I'm lending it to them for three reasons...the weather here is somewhat less than poopy and I am having them paint gloss black rally stripes on it with the stripe going over the rear spoiler like the one at Barrett-Jackson which I prefer. As well as they are friends of mine and they need to generate buisness as best they can. If it draws traffic to the showroom (and stays clean) until I can drive in nice weather so be it. Or until they get one of thier own.

UCF w00t 04-20-2009 02:04 PM

I can't tell for certain but I looked at the video (3:37 mark) ugxvibe shot of Rick's #1 car and it looks like his has them as well.

theholycow 04-20-2009 02:06 PM

Thermal ballast. When doing heavy braking, they sink heat from the caliper...

is this a joke?

franknbeans 04-20-2009 02:13 PM

this is very strange

Very cool,

Are you going to have the stripes painted over the front mailslot as well, like on the bumble bee camaro, or just leave it on the hood like the factory stripes? I think if you are paying to have them painted you should DEFINATELY go over the mail slot as well.

Any chance you'd be willing to let us know how much you paid for the painted stripes?

I think there will be quite a few people that want glossy black stripes and will be getting them painted if the black rally stripes from GM end up being matte black - as we've been hearing about lately.

Kwaz1335 04-20-2009 02:27 PM

What he said..^^..they are used in racing applications...DO NOT REMOVE THEM!!!!!under heavy braking (like trying to slow down a 4000 pound vehicle in less than 110 feet you need something to pull heat away from the caliper or the caliper gets so hot it boils the brake fluid basically rendering it useless. Once brake fluid boils it is no good and loses its ability to create pressure in the lines over time. Racers bleed their brakes basically replacing all the fluid in the system every few races. You can either have forced air cooling or a heat sink..in this case its the heat sink and it lessens the amount of intervals in which the fluid would have to be replaced. Just imagine driving in heavy traffic and it starts to clear up then having to stop short...and not being able to :confused0068:
