I encountered this issue. For me, I disconnected the solenoid that holds the key in place. Can't recall the specific process, but I know that it was easy, quick (15-30 minutes), and didn't require me to order any parts. I haven't noticed any issues as a result of the change.
If you do this, make sure that nobody ever pulls out your key while driving. It'll supposedly lock the steering wheel in place.

Edit: Here is a video that shows the process:
The process, as shown in the video (in case the video disappears):
- Adjust steering wheel position (there's an adjustment lever underneath the wheel) so that it's pulled completely towards the driver, and as far up as possible. Lock the wheel in this new position.
- Remove the three 7mm bolts that are on the bottom side of the steering column(?). You'll see some indentations/holes where they're each located.
- Pop the steering column open. There appears to be three sections (bottom left, bottom right, top center). In the video, the guy specifically pops the left bottom section away from the right half, eventually completely removing it. He then separates the right bottom section from the top center section (he had to work the hole in the bottom right section over/past the key to remove the section).
- On the right side, without the cover that you removed, there's a little yellow box just past the keyhole. There's a plug that you disconnect from the yellow box. The plug has a tiny lever that you push, which allows you to disconnect the plug.
- Your key should now be able to be removed. Reassemble everything that you took apart.
