I'm wondering if the Camaro stores the old sensors, and gets confused if the originals are stored nearby.

My own Camaro has not had this issue. It is an early build, and my stock wheels are stored over 100 ft away in the shop. This might not be the solution, but I'm curious about if there are any similarities here.
My winter wheels/tires(which contain their own separate sensors), which are on my garage wall about 5 feet from my car, do not interfer with the wheels on the car once I have set them according to the manual. Please see my previous post (#20) in this thread. I add about 40+ lbs of air prior to doing the TPMS dance when I switch wheels and start removing air accordingly.

I hope this helps!
